BAGELS.... and more bagels

My guess is Layla’s, both for the lack of hole, the line, and what I agree is an un-bagel-like texture

Brooklyn Bagel Bakery (on Beverly): Decidedly hole-y…

And oftentimes day old and rock hard.

I’ve seen lots of photos of Calic that don’t. Like this…

And read a review somewhere about their texture. But I can’t find it.

I would not call those bagels but the ones on the right have cute belly buttons.

I would call those rolls not bagels

Anyone been to calic? I just saw a jalepeno cream cheese stuffed bagel on insta

Did it have a hole?

RE: Calic

Yeah it’s interesting it’s like sometimes there are holes and sometimes there aren’t.

Honestly for myself I couldn’t care less if there’s a hole, as long as the crust and texture is good.

I don’t think it’s intentional for some places.

Now there was a place in Simi Valley that all their bagels are made without holes by design for sandwiches. Yeah they weren’t good though.

At Courage, I had to wait—and wait, and wait—for my half-dozen. As the sun grew hotter, and I paced back and forth, restlessly sipping on a rose-flavored lemonade, I had to wonder, What were they doing in there? You could imagine a chef adhering sesame seeds one at a time with a tweezer.

LOL!!

So, what was your bagel verdict ??

I haven’t had any bagels in LA.

Oh sorry, I misread this. You were quoting the article. Oops

Got to Courage at 7:30 this morning. Four people in line. Received my bagel at 8:02. Over a half hour for a bagel even with a small line.

Tried to sneak in a Courage pick-up before work and got there when they opened. Already more than a dozen people in line when I cruised by at 7:01 AM. Maybe that minute of lateness made all the difference. It being a Friday wouldn’t have helped. I didn’t have 1.5 hours to wait while each caper was individually pickled, so settled for Maury’s, which I don’t love but only took about five minutes.

From my experience 5-10 people show up between 6:45-7:00a so that really changes how long you’re going to end up waiting.

Any intel on this place? Looks like they originated in NY.

Bagel Boss is now open in Burbank on Magnolia. I’ll need to interrogate them whether their “lox” spread is smoked salmon or really lox. I know these places appreciate me doing that.

EDIT:

HOLY SHIT

Expensive as hell but...

I wrote about this in the Burbank thread but they’re good! Definitely the most New York-yish option in town. Sort of on par with current iteration of H&H in NYC. Really dig their BECs or with sausage.

Same price as Zabars (Belly Lox by Zabar’s)

Anyone have insider info on the opening for H+H Bagels on Montana Ave? Outside signage is up - but that doesn’t mean anything if we go by how long Breadhead had signage up (it was a year).
