I love their beers + art, but I was surprised by the food. We went during the brunch. The happy hour (weekdays only) seems to have a pretty good deal with the burger + fries or beer for like $12.
I try and support local first as much as i can… so Highland Park for me… still best local beer and … their food is quite good from all appearances. I did enjoy every time I visited Mikkeller, food is quite good but in comparison it’s dead atmosphere unless you’re there during peak times.
I’m close by to Mikkeller and think it’s a great place for after work libations. Burgers are good but I really like their flatbreads. The sausages are good, just hold the bun.
how’s modern times… i was so excited that they were opening here but somehow haven’t been able to visit yet… tried twice, saw lines went to Mikk
In general, I think that the food at breweries is not very good but I really enjoy the food at the Highland Park Brewery in Chinatown.
The fried cheese curds are everything they should be, crispy and cheesy without being too greasy or soggy. The bread and cheese boards have a good selection and great bread (anyone know who bakes it?)
Yeah, some of the actual bbq is mediocre but I like the tater tot casserole, mac & cheese, and portobello fries. We’ve been fans since around the time Julian first started brewing at the Seal Beach brewpub. Despite all the trendy IPAs nowadays, I still tend to favor Beachwood. Yup, love Blendery as well.
Trendy is one way to put it. Another way is that people who drank tons of really hoppy IPAs had palate fatigue and eventually started to favored the aromatic, but less bitter, soft palate, oat and wheat added to the mix, East coast/vermont style IPAs that are all the rage last couple of years.
You still have a preference for west coast ipas and that’s cool, but dont paint me a trend hopper Seal Beach has always been waaay more cozy to have some pints at (and walk the pier after)
And since we’re on LBC we might as well mention Steelcraft for a decent time
Where in my post did I paint you as anything? I didn’t even know what IPAs you’re into to begin with…
And I agree with you regarding palate fatigue, but as someone who trades beer quite a bit, I’ve come across many folks who don’t seem to really care about taste. They just want the next big thing just to say they’ve tried it. Especially hard to get stuff such as Monkish cans (I love Monkish, fwiw).
To bring this back to food:
Yes, Steelcraft is cool. Plus it has Desano.
I forgot to mention Phantom Carriage Brewery in Carson. I like their house made sausages.
not really. last time I was there (quite a while ago) the sandwiches came out of the fridge case and were served cold (cold duck confit is not the way to go…). I think the soft pretzel wasn’t too bad…maybe they’ve stepped up their game since???
Last time I was @ MacLeod’s they had a grilled sausage truck that was pretty tasty—they have rotating food trucks/vendors pull up outside the brewery.
