I’ve only been a few times (and only to the DTLA location, not the Westwood one). The first couple times, I really liked the regular slice (and in fact saw Danny training a team member and showing a slice that stayed straight when you held it up as one that was finished correctly).
The last time I went, my regular slice flopped, and I haven’t felt the urgency to go back. The Sicilian has been fantastic every time though - really nice chew while still being airy. I hope they’re able to get some consistency with the thin slices - when they’re on, they’re among the best in town.
I enjoyed Westwood very much for a classic greasy NYC slice - just like I grew up with.
I didn’t try the Sicilian but it looked like what I grew up with as well
Went to the Westwood location of Danny Boys, and it seems like they are back to their best, which is quite encouraging! Had the Sicilian and the thin slice. Crust for both was on point. Sergio was at the Westwood location.
I went to Danny Boy’s 3x at the OG location and the crust was very disappointing…Mr Holzman saw me photographing the pie and I told him the crust was way too soft…sorry, the 3rd time I just got a couple reheats and same problem…but the above photo of the reg slice @Westwood location looks much better…I’ll check out Danny Boys this week…More disappointment…met old friends @ Little Coyote today and again, a major let down…we ordered a fresh 1/2 sausage, 1/2 mushroom pie…sausage was orange colored (I presume from the sauce which maybe had some cream in it…Terrible crust…limp dick soft & floppy! very sad as the 1st pie I had there(3 years ago?) was excellent…Little Coyote fucking SUX!!! how the fuck do you ruin the pizza like that?
First 2 trips to Little Coyote were amazing when the lines were long and they only had 1 location. The last 2 trips after expansion were not good. We haven’t been there in a few years. We really enjoyed their sandwiches and the pizza. Shame.
The decline started a few years back when the ownership team started pulling away from the business. Now it’s under completely new ownership. Real shame, when they first got started I thought it was a top-5 slice in LA County. Maybe the same folks who managed to ruin Hail Mary also bought and ruined Little Coyote.
Thanks for the article. This makes sense. Too bad. Little Coyote was a good spot. Little Coyote has been replaced by Folks and Prime Pizza in lil Tokyo. All are about 30-45 mins away from Brea.

This Long Beach, Calif., spot serves a range of styles, such as Sicilian squares and Chicago tavern style. But Elliott says this former pizza van turned bricks-and-mortar spot is emblematic of the California pizza movement. “You can get squash blossoms on one and fennel-crusted sausage on the other and nobody bats an eye,” he says.
It’s a former pizza van that is now brick and mortar. We stop in when we go shopping for Japanese antiques in the LBC. It’s been a while, so I’ll just say we really dug the slices we tried.
