shunji hashiba of tokyo’s sushi shunji and sushi saito’s number one protege stopped by brothers sushi for a three day pop-up this weekend.
I’ll leave the sexy sensational seductive shunji-san sushi superlatives to the superior scribes and just say it was the best omakase I’ve had in the lower 48.
Looks great! Serious sinking action. The uni maki is a supreme show stopper. Kue looks very shiny. And his abalone is maybe the tenderest I’ve had. He serves some very superlative sakes, too, easy to get carried away…Looks worth a journey…
Highlights were the katsuo, aged yellowtail, kasugodai (best I’ve ever had), shiro ebi (also the best I’ve ever had), tachiuo tempure, shima aji, and the abalone w/truffles (wherein the truffles actually tasted like something, as opposed to not).
Extremely strong showing. I’d maybe expected another 2-3 courses but I didn’t leave hungry, so it’s fine. The rate at which LA racks up very good high-end sushi-yas makes me miss it even more.
I’m more impressed each time I come to brothers, they’re constantly improving. the dry aged tuna in all forms here is delicious, so much umami. Mark also tweaked his shari to give it more sourness which I like.
pretty much everything was a highlight, no misses.
Really hard to pick, execution was consistently good! Burger was a lot of fun, ankimo was one of the best I’ve had, both toro , first time I’ve had shiroebi…
the caveat with brothers is that it gets extremely loud because of the large dining room and sergio is not always there.
inaba and 8eight will be much calmer. 8eight is the most edomae out of the three.
Thank you both. I’m trying to cancel Sonagi reso on 3/24 to go to either 8eight or I-naba but Mondays are hard for my friend as she’s coming from Pasadena and I-naba is fully booked as well.
