Didn't get the joke / what joke? / nasty lurkers

@robert Why are you rude to people for no reason?

@LouisianaMouth thanks for the contribution. A few of these have been on my list for a while (Vinfolk, Baby Bistro) - hope to get out to them soon.

I like how carefully you treaded across that minefield, CB…

Robert is an angry guy he’s rude to everyone, claims to be protecting the Food Talk Central brand, but in reality he’s preventing people from making lists of their favorite restaurants, he’s hurting the enthusiasm for the LA food scene and driving people away from the site. He may not want it mentioned but he’s a failed (to put it kindly) restaurant owner who just seems bitter.

That’s the biggest pile of bullshit anyone’s posted here in a while, you nasty anonymous lurker. People can post prety much whatever they like. There’s certainly no policy against lists. I owned a restaurant for a short time 15 years ago and am not bitter about that at all.

Here’s the only other post from that asshole.

ah.

thanks for the reminder of why I dumped this place.

I don’t if @robert’s going to be okay w/ me posting this, but, when posters were unhappy w/ his moderation style early in FTC’s history, my distinct memory is that he was open to someone buying him out (for what I remember seemed to be a pretty cheap price), and… there was deafening silence.

I certainly don’t agree w/ some of what he writes or w/ aspects of her moderation style, but I think for people who don’t regularly participate here to come and bash someone who has made at least some attempt to create a consistent community for those us in LA/OC is kind of below the belt and doesn’t reflect well upon the poster, TBH.

you’ve mistaken the often issue.

I lurk.

I don’t’ participate (much) because . . . (cause given)

Well said. It’s fine to be critical but personal comments are a bit too much. He also hasn’t deleted the posts trashing him fwiw

I think @Crusader’s post was an unnecessarily mean and personal swipe, though I agree with the broader point that Robert is “driving people away from the site”.

My main problem with your behavior and moderation, @robert is twofold:

(1) You are unnecessarily hostile.
For example, your original post in this thread. @LouisianaMouth started out with an acknowledgment that she feels intimidated posting here, and your response is to mock her. That would be one thing coming from a regular poster, but from the owner and sole admin/moderator, it is far beneath how you should behave and what we should expect. You have also singled me out for not contributing anything of value, which is ludicrous. I encourage anybody on this site to read through my post history - if anybody else agrees that I contribute nothing of value, please speak up as I would genuinely like to hear it. I am open to being wrong.

(2) Your moderation is arbitrary and capricious and displays clear favoritism.
The thread-splitting is a perfect example: it stifles discussion even when the overwhelming majority of users disagree with the split, and it’s applied inconsistently. If I mention pricing, it’s an immediate split. Fifty other users discuss prices in restaurant threads and nothing happens.

This is your site and you can run it however you want, but there are many people publicly imploring you to have a little self reflection (and many more who have voiced similar sentiments privately).

I split threads when a tangent overruns the core discussion of a topic. Your posts about prices tend to be off-topic rather than relevant to whatever restaurant a topic is about, plus your tone is usually unpleasant, as it is here. You’re in no position here to opine on the depth of anyone’s self-reflection.

In the unlikely event that’s true, I’m giving unvoiced concerns the attention they deserve.

My attention to criticism of my moderation is proportional to the contributions and civility of the complainant. The biggest complainers are often net negative and/or don’t get a joke.

Does every thread have to be blighted by this nonsense now? I can see @LouisianaMouth waiting another 10 months (or more!) before posting again. Delightful post btw. And yummy pics @CiaoBob. I wanna go to Vinfolk now.

I have been posting more frequently on FTC since December because I have found moderation elsewhere online to be arbitrary and capricious.

There’s always Reddit, HungryOnion and eGullet, if one doesn’t like the style of moderation on this site.

I have noticed and appreciated your more frequent posts, btw. I appreciate you expanding the geographic reach of the site – keep it up!

Thank you! I appreciate it.

I have been finding the posters here very supportive and I like it here

Total aside, but do you have any recs for a dinner in Winnipeg? Anything truly outstanding there if you’ve got one meal?

Me?

I haven’t been to Winnipeg in ages but it has amazing food!

Hard to limit it to one meal.

Regional stuff:

Walleye (aka pickerel )

Goldeye fish

Applejack - a apple pie type handpie

Imperial: a cookie that is similar to an Empire biscuit. A sugar cookie sandwich cookie with raspberry or other red jam in the middle, white icing on top, and a cherry or dried cranberry on the icing.

Vinarterta (prune cake, prob hard to find these days)

if you like Ukrainian food, there is good Ukrainian food in the Peg

There’s a massive Cheeseburger called The Fat Boy iirc, let me find the name.

let me think some more.
