Favorite store or restaurant bought salsas?

My favorite snack on the planet is chips and salsa. I eat an unconscionable amount of it. So much so that when I get to the chip-crumbles part of the bag I just pour all of them into a bowl of salsa and eat it like cereal. Generally, I am too lazy to make the salsa for myself,
so I just drag my arm along the shelf of freshly made salsa at Northgate Market when I need a fix. Of those my favorite is the Salsa Taquera but it seems like the formula is always changing on it.

I would love to hear the boards suggestions for the best store bought salsas around LA. I’m talking about grocery store, restaurant or carniceria salsas that are freshly made. All spice levels welcome, bonus points if it makes good salsa cereal.

Thanks y’all!

If you live near a Baja Fish Tacos you can get an order of chips and salsa for ~$4. They give you a bag of chips. The chips are on the thicker side but very good. The real deal is the half pint container they provide for you to fill up with any salsa you want. We go for the green. But wait there’s more. While at the salsa bar add a few small containers of pico de gallo or their delicious habanero onions.

We eat here often and order a bunch of burritos and plates so we’re not just getting the $4 chips and salsa then raiding the salsa bar. But I’ve seen people do just this.

I like the TJ’s one (is it medium? I can’t remember), as well as the Gelson’s branded one (I think they make a variety of heat levels).

Farmers market count?

Acapico Salsa from Santa Ana.

The salsas and guac are imo some of the best “store” bought you can get.

I have polished off a whole thing of guac and the lettuce salsa on a Saturday morning. It’s that good.

Oh hell yeah Holbox x 2.

One of those are pretty dangerous!!!

Vallarta store brand chips and any of their house salsas. The guac is WORTH IT. I prefer the house brand plain chips over their house brand “premium” chips.

Vallarta probably the best value for quality. Never had a bad one from there. We are talking about the big fancy ones right with a dedicated station?

Yes! The salsas with their own refrigerator. The store I go to most frequently also has a heat guide on the different options - obviously your mileage will vary but I find the green salsas to be the most vinegary, and with the biggest heat punch. The dark red and black varieties are my favorites.

The spicy guac is the perfect combination of cold temperature, warm and tingling palate, coupled with a giant, delicious bag of chips. Big fan.

I saw them at Atwater. Have you tried the tortillas?

Heading to OC for Christmas with the family on Saturday. One of our first stops will be Taqueria Zamora in Santa Ana for our first meal. Their green salsa is nice and spicy and addictive to me. We bought a quart of it last year to go with tamales.

Another vote for El Machete. I’m addicted to their avocado salsa and pickled onions. Good chips and tortillas too.

I have not tried the tortillas since El Machete started making their own. They used to sell tortillas and masa from Kernel of Truth. I only noticed recently that they started making their own tortillas. If you try them, let me know how they are!

What part of town? My favorite salsa is from Lares and from The Talpa - both westside restaurants.

Really open to anything in SoCal so that I can try them when in different areas. I appreciate all the recommendations so far!

Which restaurant has the best chips? For me it’s tito’s.

My favorite chips are Bar Ama. Big and thick and crispy. Can’t say I love their salsa though. My favorite salsa for chips and salsa is a TexMex-style pico de gallo with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, and onions. Sol Agave has a decent salsa along these lines, but it could be better.
