February 2026 Rundown

The hype surrounding Salted Butter Company’s cinnamon roll is real. Even after many hours of it sitting in the car, this was the yummiest cinnamon roll I’ve had! I think they use a croissant dough base. I’m inspired to start running so I can eat more of these with less guilt.

I agree Salted Butter’s take is tasty and I’m not even a fan of cinnamon rolls in general — usually too sweet and too much frosting for my liking. My regret is not asking for it in a separate box as I got 6 pastries and the frosting got on all the other pastries; that was a bummer.

Then maybe partner and I will finally find a cinnamon roll we can agree on. I generally find cinnamon rolls disgusting for the very reasons you mentioned…

El Moro Churrería opens in Echo Park on Sunset Blvd… Good frying, and the food comes out piping hot! But the churros I got had just a smidge too much sugar coating it, thus somewhat unbalacing the overall taste when dipped. Maybe I’ll ask for “light sugar” on my next order. Nonetheless, El Moro is a very welcome specialist!

The play here is the ice cream sandwich. It’s astounding. They use good ice cream and the churro ends are handmade and come warm. Ours wasn’t PERFECT and they almost didn’t give it to us but P is too nice and took it anyway. Honestly. It was perfect.

Bo I’ve had El Moro in Mexico City and several times here including catering. I found the churros to be okay. But the cinnamon sugar mixture they use to be star. They use some excellent cinnamon. Also the Cajeta is the best dip. And the hot chocolate is okay. Haven’t tried their cafe de Olla yet. Next time!

How was the line? Is it like the cdmx lines?

Not really. When I went it was only 4-5 deep. Fast service.

We went like opening week on a Friday at around 8:30p. Not our brightest idea but we rarely have a night out together nowadays and so we were both eager and excited to try.

In total, we waited a little over an hour. They have a limited menu and two registers so the line moved quickly at first. Then right before we hit the door, a register went down and they were just down to one and that slowed things down considerably. Also, we got out regular churros quickly, but the ice cream sandwich because of the way it was made all by hand, took a good while. So be aware of that.

All in a all it wasn’t as painful as some of the other lines I’ve been in . They have lots of people working (The night we went they had folks from Mexico City overseeing things) and overall good vibes. I would go back for sure and I am excited about the Culver City branch opening up eventually.

For all the OC folks Don Churros Gomez in Santa Ana is great as well. Parking is a bit tricky. I like El Moro as well but slight edge to Don Churros Gomez.

They also have a truck parked in Anaheim Marketplace (really close to Disney)

SOBAR Culver City last night after picking up something from FB Marketplace. 7 covers with 17 people and we got 1 hero bussing, hosting, and serving. Get this guy some help! The tea is there was an ownership change; the original sous chef has also departed.

Kami nego soba. Much better than my first time. Soft and tender duck breast and good chew on the noodle, but my heart’s with Otafuku. The Sapporo was extra cold and extra delicious.

Uphill slide? Heartening to hear. That piping cold beer sounds great…

I think the sous now used to mostly focus on the dishwashing, so that we’ve got some really great duck breast is indeed heartening! Buckwheat flour is still domestic (Maine), but no longer roasted and milled in LA.

Per our server (also overworked) a few weeks ago: there was an ownership change and the original chef (a Japanese woman) is gone. But the food and drink was pretty solid. The wife LOVES their shiso dipping sauce.

Make that LOVED - I am looking at the menu and it looks like that got removed.

I suspect the hill is down, not up

Does the cheese on top of the meat add anything? Is it kind of like of like a deconstructed cheeseburger?

This is good to know! I tried to go for the first time and they turned me away because I didn’t have a res. Funny thing is there were so many reservations available on Yelp. I asked the single (overworked) server about it and he said that he’s not sitting anyone anymore because they’re understaffed. Wish he had told me that from the start rather than doing the “no res” dance but thats okay.

@paranoidgarliclover per the cheese: my family thought it was fun when they lit it on fire but honestly i think I would’ve been happier without it.

Yeah I’m with you the cheese is such an annoying insta gimmick, muddies the flavors
