Making categorical statements about Mexican food is a losing proposition as it’s so subject to evolution and improvisation.

Still, there are no tomatoes in guacamole, just as there’s no guar gum in tortillas.

Tomatoes are pretty common but like Robert i prefer with out. Just with a little white onion and serrano pounded in a molcajete with some salt. Just a bit of Mexican / key lime. Sometimes I like a little good olive oil, i think the flavor matches nicely though not exactly traditional either.

Tomatoes may be common in some places, but in a week in Michoacán, avocado central, I never saw it made with anything but lime juice and salt. Often there was pico de gallo for anyone who wanted tomatoes.

We like guacamole that way, too, @Dommy
Though, both ways can be great depending on our mood or what I have on hand.

I think my hatred for tomatoes in guacamole comes largely from feeling ripped off in US restaurants where the motive isn’t that they taste good but that using flavorless supermarket tomatoes as filler increases the profit margin.

Same. I think it adds much needed texture to the avocado mash.

What about the cilantro? My recipe is the same with the cilantro. I don’t use olive oil in guacamole but I add liberally to avocado mash for avocado toast. Maybe I’ll try olive oil in guacamole next time.

Agree 100%

I love cilantro but i can do with out it in guacamole. If the avocados are good there’s no need to hide it with lots of other stuff especially since when i make it there will usually be a couple of salsas(both prob with cilantro) maybe extra onion + cilantro on the side too if I’m bbqing.

Usually Costco has good avocados, but where do people like to buy theirs? I’ll occasionally get them from the farmers market, really like the ones from See canyon orchards

White onion, cilantro, tomato and either fresh serano or roasted jalapeño. All folded together with lime juice and finished with sea salt. It’s like 80% avocado. I’ve had luck finding ripe bags of avocado at Target for those last minute cravings… I guess no one at Target is going for Avocado… :joy:

Although Yucatecans love Olive Oil on everything…. I don’t like like it in Guac. I do like it on Avo toast with tomatoes on top. But not Avo toast with Cucumbers on top. I love Olive oil with tomato bagels with capers…

I’m normally a no cilantro person. But your mom has the magic touch, her salsa’s and guac even with the cilantro are amazing to me!

Fair enough. So when you originally wrote “There are no tomatoes in guacamole!”, you simply misspelled “Personally, I hate tomatoes in guacamole.” Now I understand.

It’s all about balance… you need it… but your don’t need to taste it…

Brokaw aka Will’s.

No, a salsa with tomatoes and avocado can be good, but it’s not guacamole. If I order guacamole in a restaurant and get that, I’m sending it back.

Frequently at mi Suegros’ Casa (I’m married to @Dommy!), slices of avocado, wedges of lime, minced onion, cilantro, and salt are on the table usually with some habanero salsa and or chiles. These are to top guisado tacos to your liking. Guacamole is made frequently with say Carne Asada and it has tomatoes in it and it’s how we top our asada and other tacos, quesadillas or as a dip.

If you want to talk about abominations, there’s Calabacitas “Guacamole”:

Or even worse, there’s Guacamole Dip:

I wonder if anything ever came of that lawsuit? I don’t think Kraft sells that garbage any more.

Kraft guacamole is essentially a whipped paste made from partially hydrogenated soybean and coconut oils, corn syrup, whey and food starch. Yellow and blue dyes give it the green color.

Yeah, I don’t really have the cilantro soap thing but the herbaceousness of it can be pretty overwhelming for me and it’s not a flavor I care for. Add on the practice for most to just dump huge handsfull of it on top of any dish and usually I just can’t taste anything except a flavor that doesn’t appeal to me.

But as a mild back note, especially if it’s been cooked, I can see where it brings a balance and different overall flavor, such as your mom’s salsas.

I wish the avocados were as good as in the 70’s and early 80 ’ s . That nutty flavor is gone . Pretty green with no taste. I believe they ran away with the strawberry.

That’s why I like the ones from See canyon, they let them hang on the tree longer so they have better flavor

You’re obviously not buying Brokaws. They’re on break until late January.
