Hot dogs - What's the best store bought brand?

If you could not tell…. I am bit picky about things… lol!!!

For Chili Dogs, I prefer skinless. The whole idea of a casing dog is that juiciness when you bite into it (And it’s why it’s my favorite type) but for a Chili dog, the joy of the snap would kinda be lost… if anything gets in the way of the chili and other toppings.

So like anything else…. It all depends on how it’s being used and up to your own preference.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a vegan dog! I down to try one though If you find a good one. Did a quick dive on the interwebs and the one that consistently seems to be rated best is called Field Roast (Classic plant based smoked frankfurter)

If you like it I’m down to try! Accidentally bought some Vegan Ice cream and it wasn’t bad (P.s. Talenti -I’m still looking for any toffee crunch in the Caramel Toffee Crunch)

I got these at whole foods today. I got the fat ones instead of the longer ones. I’m thinking of putting them in the freezer for a bit because I was going to BBQ them and with the fires the last thing we need is more smoke.

Those are the skinless and should do quite well on the grill. My favorite are the long ones, which I steam so not to risk rupturing the casing. Both types freeze very well. They aren’t cheap, so I tend to stock up when they are one sale, which is usually around hot dog type holidays.

Yes, Whole Foods has them on sale periodically - + extra discount with Amazon Prime - and I always buy a few packs for the freezer.

IIRC Helms is selling packages of the actual RC provisions chili.

I’m fond of the weinerwurst from European Deluxe in BH. Medium snappy casing, not too salty.

I believe you can also get it at Smart and Final. The Delores brick isn’t terrible either.

I ended up getting the XLNT brand. It was really good. Not a lot of gristle or weirdness like in the Delores brick, which is what I usually get. But, it kinda grosses me out sometimes.

The hot dogs were delish. almost too high quality for a hot dog, if that makes sense. I deep fried them instead of bbq. Nothing taste as good as a BBQ dog to me.

We’ve looked for it at a few Smart and Finals on the east side but haven’t found it. If anyone knows of a Smart and Final that carries it please let us know!

Saw these at Stater Bros. You could just wrap the bacon on the dogs yourself but still pretty cool

After being gone for a year, Boars Head knockwurst are back in stock at Ralphs. Haven’t spotted the frankfurters yet.

OK back at Ralphs in Sherman Oaks. New packaging. $8.99. They look larger than they used to.7 (?? Why) per pack.

I don’t know why it bothers me but I want my cured meat products to be cured and not ‘uncured’

“Uncured” is marketing bullshit. It just means cured with celery powder, which is high in nitrates and nitrites, rather than sodium nitrite or the like.

I know, and I’m sure it’s just as safe but i don’t trust the standards to be as rigorous.

Based on what data - it is the company’s interest to use the required amount of nitrates/nitrites to avoid any liability- and the source doesn’t matter - it is the same molecule

From what I’ve read, celery powder isn’t as consistent. So they might have to use more to ensure there’s enough.

Just bought some snakeriver farms gourmet franks at Ralphs (Safeway in Norcal). Great snap, good meaty flavor, same hot dog taste. I liked it better than the Johnsonville smoke bratwurst which I also got.
