Nice. Egg cream and cottage fries? Love that.
Yep. Chocolate egg cream, but those are their ‘french fries.’ Guess they do cottage style. They were quite good.
I did a bunch of UWS bageling and bialying this trip too. Bo’s, Bagel and Co, Orwashers. May post pics.
Do you hit up Zabar’s on your trips back home? Such a happy place!
It’s actually my in laws, but I go frequently enough that it’s almost a second home! And Zabar’s is so integrated into UWS life. There’s always something from there - babka, bagels, smoked fish - in the apartment.
So it’s part of the rotation, along with Pastrami Queen, Charles Fried Chicken, Mama’s Too, and Joe’s Steamed Rice Roll. I need to try Murray’s Sturgeon Shop and frequent Barney Greengrass. And I had a very good (though expensive) meal at Kebab aur Sharab recently.
I live a few blocks from there and stil haven’t tried it. Looking forward to the review.
I like the knishes there. I’m a meat knish lover. Definitely like these better than Yonah Schimmel’s. Also you gotta get real lox, right @JeetKuneBao ?
Absolute Bagel closed for violations. Free NYT article
Oh no I wondered what happened. They are essential UWS and to the NYC bagel scene.
Probably temporary. Hopefully
Jonny’s Pizza, Orchard x Stanton, LES.
Heard good things about this place and the vodka pie. Looks like the new school style with fermentation and finished with shredded parm. Really close to Katz, R&D’s, Una Pizza Napoletana, Punjabi Deli, Le French Diner, Saigon Social, and tons of deli’s/bodegas.
Man, I wish I had know this yesterday. I had a couple of days in NYC so I did my share of slice tasting.
Chrissy’s Pizza, Regular Pie
L’industrie , Margherita & New Yorker (West Village location)
The line was probably 50 people deep when I got there. They’ve got the service down to a science so from the time I stood in line to the time I got my pizza was about 30 minutes all in. I ordered a Margherita and it was magical. Chrissy’s might have a slight edge on L’industrie but being able to get a slice instead of a whole pie is a big plus. As I was finishing my slice, another patron offered me a slice of their New Yorker which had cooled down substantially. It really made a difference. The flavor was still good but the bottom of the crust had sogged out. There is a short life span on these pies.
Stretch Pizza, Cheese Slice
Scarr’s, Cheese Slice
Thanks for the report back.
Chrissy’s looks so good! Thanks for visiting and I know it’s out of the way for tourist in Manhattan. Looks like just take the E to Court to the G. It’s on my to-do list.
I take it the line at Mama’s TOO was insane as well?
I bet a lot of people do that bang bang.
Scarrs has been inconsistent to me. Probably wouldn’t repeat or give a full rec personally
I did the bang bang at Mama Too and L’Industrie because I’m on FTC. My friend told me afterwards that the move at Mama Too are the chicken parm heroes.
We sat down at Scarrs and ordered a whole pie which was delicious except for the very skimpy amount of pepperoni.
Indeed it was. Honestly, the whole West Village was packed with pizza lines. I had a beer at Blind Tiger in between slices and the line for John’s of Bleecker St was down the block also.
I will +1 on the love for upside pizza (midtown east is where I went too). Was just taking visiting guests to try some pizza, not expecting much, and the mushroom slice really surprised me. Good sicilian too.
John’s of Bleecker St. Very good. Not as good as I remembered and not in the same class as Savoy or PST even though very different styles. Would prefer to grab slices a few blocks away at L’Industrie given a choice. The supreme was too heavy. Should have stuck to just pepperoni or margherita.
Cho Dang Gil (no pics) was great on a chilly night. Seafood pancake was nice and crispy not too thick. The kimchi soon tofu hit the spot. Very long wait at 7pm. My only gripe is that the soon tofu does not come with rice. You have to order separately. Kinda weird for this type of restaurant.
Sakagura was the best meal of our trip. Cho toro, Hokkaido uni and the sashimi was well prepared and delicious. We got more toro for dessert. Nice ikura. I think I prefer ikura as sushi. Need some rice to offset the briny balls.
Eggplant was great. Just the right amount of sweetness and great char.
Crispy chicken karage. This came out piping hot. Like the surface of the sun hot. Crunchy and great with the avocado mayo.
Yellowtail collar. Lot of nice meaty pieces.
We ordered a lot of other stuff. Veggies and udon were lovely. Gomae specifically. Great wagyu on hot stone. Excellent sake list. We had a lot of bottles of Kubota.
This is right up my alley. Grandma cooking! What an amazing concept.
Also walking distance from the Staten Island Ferry!
Pizza tour with 2 friends. We wanted to include Ceres but they were closed on Tuesday.
3rd place
Lucia of SoHo. The most traditional slice. Still delicious. Reminded me of pizza I grew up with in Queens. A lot of pepperoni grease. All 3 of us agreed this was the 3rd best.
2nd place
Jonny’s. The best pepperoni on the tour. Thin well baked crust bordering on almost burned. Reminiscent of good bread. 1 of the 3 said this was his favorite.
1st place
Cellos. Owner was there and said they kept the pizza maker who was at Funzi’s (the previous incarnation) but improved on the ingredients. Excellent in very aspect. Great slice and in Manhattan I would rate this 2nd to L’Industrie. 2 of the 3 rated this the best.
