Bosnian coffee, burek, and grah (white bean soup) at Rumor’s Cafe in Encino. Such an unlikely place to find this food, the cafe is on the second floor of a building full of doctors offices and serves them and their clients. The two women who run the place mostly just provide sandwiches and bagels for folks, but are super excited when someone comes in expressing an interest in their foods from back home.
Wow nice find! Deep cut
I got one for you…
Cairo Restaurant, Little Arabia
Koshary. Rice, spaghetti, lentils, chickpeas, tomato sauce, and fried onions with a side bottles of spicy tomato sauce and garlic vinegar. National dish of Egypt. Super filling and comforting. Plant-based too!
Egyptian Falafel. Fava instead of chickpeas with sesame seeds on outside.
I like that place! I have enjoyed a couple Egypt national team matches on their outdoor patio. I do not think I had the koshary there, always a satisfying gut bomb though!
Really, really enjoyed my meal from Kurrypinch yesterday. A tad bit salty, but the flavors were truly insane. This is their Lamprais meal only available on weekends.
Luyu Dumplings. Shandong power!!! Nothing but green flags here…..the kitchen has a granny making the noodles, boxes of stock around the restaurant, no ambiance no art no vibes, boss lady doing boss things, and I think there is a restroom or not lol.
The noodles here! This is one of the best bowl of noodles in LA right now. At $9 the highest QPR possible. If you want noodle soup definitely go for the the thiccc and wide noodle. This bowl of youpo noodles with garlic, scallion, chile flakes, and oil. THIS IS IT. Make sure you mix this properly. Not just circles. Separate and get some height to it. I add a little chile oil and black vinegar as well. So good I got 2 bowls. Also it’s almost like a aglio oglio peppecino. I would put this Shandong granny against Evan Funke.
Luyu is so good! And no restroom, they send you to the salon next door haha.
I wanted to go to Luyu today, but Peony chose Tsubaki instead. She explained that Japanese > northern Chinese (wheat-based dumplings, noodles, etc.) to her southern Chinese tastes.
Tsubaki was the same as always. Good neighborhood Japanese. Conversely, I think Luyu has trip-worthy dumplings.
That may be even better than James Wang as a marker of delicious food in the SGV…

Awesome plz report back about your Vancouver explorations I go once a year so I’m always looking for more spots.
oooh we’re headed up there for a little trip in two months. first trip back in almost ten years. looking forward to some good dining.
Tomat is a great spot when you are around LAX and you are thinking to yourself where should I go eat? (side note: Niko’s truck has a very good torta as well)
But at Tomat, the crispy liberty duck with pomegranate walnut mole is one of my favorite dishes of the year so far - they seem to be experimenting with the side dish to complete the meal but for me they had duck confit inside of stuffed cabbage which should be kept. I think now it’s dolmeh (stuffed grapes). Anyways, the stuffed cabbage with duck confit was a lovely californian and eastern european twist bringing me back to my days of loving some gołąbki. Very good.
Matu cheesesteak good but not 31 dollars good (inclu tax and mandatory 18%) I respect that they don’t ask for tip on top of that though.
Food pricing is unreal these days
::gasp::

Sorry total mistype 18% not 28%. You are just sitting at a bar though so there isn’t a ton of “service”
Damn. I heard good things about that cheesesteak.
Looks like a mix of John’s and Angelo’s.
Any papi store cheesesteak in Philly is better than 99% of the steaks out here. If you look you can get out with a steak, bag of chips, and a bev for a little over $10 maybe $15
