It certainly is an eclectic group - I think it is fair to say that the Goldster would probably be proud.
Moo’s coming in that high is quite a surprise to me. Maybe he mixed up Parks and Moos in the order of MEATS.
And, also surprisingly, I suppose, the list is Puck-less. Cut really should make the cut.
The endless Republique love continues to amaze me, as I have written before. I don’t dislike it - not at all - but don’t find it incredible and the level of quality varies so much from dish to dish and meal to meal.
So Republique is like a basic old favorite it’s nothing special, special, but that’s why people like it? People love brunch there - source, family member who used to work at Republique.
I find Anajak over Kato to be pretty funny. I love Justin and it’s incredible what he’s done with his families spot, but Kato is just on another level in my opinion.
I was joking lol in my original post. Full disclosure I haven’t been to republique yet I only know of it through second hand talk. And no. I will not subscribe
There are too many excellent sushi and other Japanese restaurants in LA so he had to leave some out. The list has ten Japanese restaurants, ten Mexican, and ten American. My guess is he arbitrarily set ten as the max for any one cuisine.
Similar story for Daybird. I think he lists nine places where fried chicken is a house specialty.
Skews rather heavily to DTLA and the Westside. Yes, yes, I know…excellent restaurants, but how many aren’t in those areas?
Just of the 101 (not the Hall of Fame), at a quick glance, I come up with 5 in SGV; 2 in the Valley; 2 in Orange County; 2 in Glendale; 1 in Inglewood; 1 in Manhattan Beach; 1 in Bell Gardens. What am I missing? I’m sure you’ll let me know
The list ought to please all the folks who always grouse “But that’s not Los Angeles” for including anything outside the city limits Who am I kidding?, they’ll still be on about the few that aren’t
I know it goes against literally all guides but I think it’s time to expand the $ signs. Make this at least out of 5, maybe even 6.
For instance, upon quick glance, Bavel is $$ and Moo’s Craft BBQ is also $$. Lol. You can easily spend 120 pp at Bavel. Good luck doing that at Moo’s.
I have enough knowledge of all these restos to know loosely how much a meal will run me at all of these places, but these $ are more or less worthless to anybody without that knowledge.
I think Bavel’s just misclassified. Should be $$$, like Saffy’s.
Majordomo might have fallen the farthest, from 21 in 2019 to 80 in 2022. And Addison says why:
Do I miss some of the kitchen’s outrageousness from the early days — the globs of raclette shaved over short rib braised with Asian pear and daikon, the thrill of rock crab claws presented three ways? Yes. The menu is ready for a renewed infusion of energy.
