March 2026 Rundown

I’ve only skimmed the posts in the rundown, so I’m totally behind, but this stuck out for me. I just picked up my first hybrid job (from my preferred place in Westwood Village): multi in the crosses + poly in the crosses. I’ve never tried a hybrid setup and have never tried poly, so this should be interesting…

My contribution to the rundown. Went to cheer on a friend in the marathon up near the Brentwood FM’s and was pleasantly surprised this (Tanuki Onigiri):

They also had a rice + mushroom dish (I had a sample), which was tasty enough.

There’s also an Indian-food vendor, Channi’s Kitchen (https://www.instagram.com/channiskitchen/?hl=en). Has anyone tried them?

Manohar Delhi Palace (La Puente). The seafood here is noticeably higher quality than most Indian places. The tandoori fish is delicious. Good meal.

Mariscos Jalisco. Really good oysters at an excellent price. Bland and chewy seafood in the botana.

Manohar’s was fantastic! Went there recently for the first time at their brick and mortar. Have had them catered at weddings before, so was nice to finally eat there.

Tun Lahmajo (Armenian, Burbank) – see Eater writeup below. Ordered from here for delivery due to the exciting menu (not at all the typical Armenian menu). We both enjoyed the food. Favorite dishes were the avelouk (a complex sorrel and onion saute), tabbouleh (which seemed more like a cross between eech and tabbouleh), and the cheese plate (three surprisingly tasty cheeses). I’d like to try it in person now.

Young king used to be my goto kanpongji in LA but it pales in comparison to little China in Gardena. Still nice to have it to go since it’s been quite a few years since my last visit

For all you fans of pressed sushi, Chef Shin-san from Sushi Masakazu (Westwood) is currently offering some excellent, delicious oshizushi “to go”! This was a low key takeout item he hadn’t really promoted, but damn if it doesn’t hit the spot! Really nice density on the shari packing, topped with lots of hikarimono, vinegar level dialed in just right. You have the option of eating your takeout order right at the counter if you like. Huge Bite!!!

Masakazu also offers a great “Sunnaku & Soba” deal. Background: Shin-san’s hobby is making soba. And now anyone can try his soba and some of that great oshizushi as well, all for $88. Book it on Tock

More recent eats:

Anajak Thai: friend from out of town visiting, and wanted to hit this spot up. Kampachi crudo, Peruvian scallops, southern Thai fried chicken, massaman braised beef, spicy drunken noods, and the collab ice cream bar w noma, all delicious :drooling_face::drooling_face:

Tacos El Yakis Estilo Sonora (North Hollywood): Incredible al pastor, my favorite in the valley besides El Venado. Handmade tortillas, crispy flavorful al pastor, anaheim chile + cheese, & fire salsas. About as good as it gets :face_savoring_food::face_savoring_food::face_savoring_food:

Bristol Farms remains one of my favorite lunch spots.

The phenomenal poke bar has been previously discussed, but some of the other prepared food is great as well. Today I added a chicken tender for a little extra protein, and it was fantastic. Fresh and light breading, juicy and tender chicken. Polar opposite of the overly fried, dried out, chewy mess that you find at most supermarkets. Poke was delicious as always.

I’ve also tried some of the other hot meat dishes in recent weeks - orange chicken, roast turkey - all really good.

What’s not good? The rice and noodle dishes tend to be pretty dried out. Maybe that’s not the case if you get there earlier, but who is eating lunch before noon?

Apparently seniors get 10% off at Bristol Farms on Tuesdays. I must’ve been the youngest person in there by several decades.

How much is the oshizushi, and is it filling enough for a lunch?

Six pieces costs $40. They are hefty and WILL be satisfying for lunch.

How does one order it? I don’t see it in their Tock!

For now, call the restaurant (310)421-9779.

I was told Shin-san will add the oshizushi to the Masakazu Tock profile soon also, for customers who want to order via Tock…

You Kitchen, Alhambra

Website

Truth be told, I should create a new topic titled “Where are you always eating?” because this small restaurant has become my Third Space. I first heard of You Kitchen in early 2020 - it’s owned and operated by a woman, and usually has only women in the kitchen. I started to go just as the woman directed Asian American violence was being reported in the Bay area, and then kept going for take out only during safer-at-home. The old, “I’ve eaten my body weight there” standard is true for me and this place. Can’t stop won’t stop.

Here’s one of my more recent meals

Tomato and egg noodles.

I know these are a mainstay of Chinese cooking however I haven’t had a lifetime of eating them. I really like this version and pick the handmade noodle option for an additional $1.

Big Mouth Pocket with pork and squash dumplings (pan fried, maybe an additional $1 charge?)

Okay, so that big mouth pocket looks good; however I swear it’s garnished with powdered charisma and pheromones because it is unnaturally good. I’ve eaten it and wondered aloud what makes it so good? Maybe it’s the of-the-minute preparation? I don’t know.

The squash [and egg] dumplings aren’t usually pan fried that dark - and when they cool off to “very warm” they are wonderfully creamy in texture.

Unappetizing close up of the squash dumpling to give an accurate impression of my near catatonic food in my face state.

Something on the menu billed as “sesame Chinese pizza.”

It takes an additional 20-30 minutes to come out. It’s not pizza, although when you order it to-go, it’s packaged in a small pizza box. I think it’s giant poofy noodles that are cleverly laid out.

My homage to the Name That Slice thread. Look at that undercarriage!

Other frequent fliers on my You Kitchen table over the years

xlb; leek pancake; dandan noodles (I usually select handmade noodles and numbing levels); cucumber salad with garlic; vegetable meatball soup; Zhajiang noodles

I’ve tried and not cared for the handgrasping cake and the thousand layer pork pancake. I think the handgrasping cake is just not for my palate - I found it too doughy but I think that’s the point? The thousand layer pork pancake was too juicy and greasy for my tastes. You Kitchen’s frozen dumpling to-go services are very strong and I almost always have a few bags in my freezer with my favorite being the corn with pork, and fennel and pork.

The next door bowling alley with 30 some lanes is open again [caveat emptor - the bowling alley isn’t serving alcohol or food yet although I think think they will be]

Looks like what most menus call that something like sesame scallion bread? I love that stuff. I usually see it at muslim / islamic Chinese places.
