March 2026 Rundown

The once-incredible fries at Burger She Wrote are now frozen worse-than-Sysco bland nothing sticks that become inedible cardboard after cooling for 60 seconds. So heartbreaking and unfortunate.

If you’re talking about the Beverly location go to Trophies Burger Club on Fairfax

Hmmm… Without a pic, hard to say, but my platonic ideal is one that is that has a top surface of flakiness, so you get textural contrast btw the crispy and chewy (but I would not consider it “doughy”). Almost like a more savory and thicker croissant that’s been pressed into a circle.

Yes, the “da bing” was a big selling point at Tung Lai Shun when the 99 Ranch in San Gabriel first opened. I loved that place…

“textural contrast btw the crispy and chewy”

I think that’s what I got however it just wasn’t my bag.

You gotta go to Ahgoo’s in Temple City if you want that big sesame scallion bing. It’s so good. One of the must eats in SGV imo

Internet search indicates this place is in Westminster. Is that the right place?

Yup it’s off the 405 on Beach Blvd.

It’s owned by a Vietnamese pop star. Never got to try them when I lived in the area.

@hungryhungryhippos did you get the banh mi’s?? Enjoy your beach day!

It’s okay. At one point it had later hours than a lot of other top Bahn Mi places so we would end up there vs. Lees.

V close to my childhood home. You can see my mom at the arket often. The banh mi is fine.

Late on reporting. Forgive this end-of-Feb entry here.

Did the Bruce/horses pop-up at Triste. Not underwhelmed but not terribly exciting. But much respect for such a small crew handling service in a bustling place. They were re-heating the hen in a Breville toaster oven.

So not underwhelmed were we that we went next door to Firstborn and had mapo tofu for dessert and two cocktails. Let us all go back to Firstborn, people!

The chicken thigh sandwich at new shared/ghost kitchen Hokkaido Fried Chicken is VERY tasty. I will be eating this over and over again. Hokkaido has a more-zesty-than-karaage spice blend for their chicken called zangi, and this inspires the sandwich. You can also get more traditional pieces as well.

Also delicious is the Sapporo-style soup curry, which is beloved on the northern island and completely different than “regular” Japanese curry. Lots of herbal notes in the bowl, and not sweet at all. This vendor is called Hokkaido Soup Curry, and they have separate ordering portals, but it is predictably the same guy.

Excellent lunch…that pulpo taco will live on in my dreams as perfection. Still love the scallops.

Arrived on Wednesday morning around 11:50AM. Waited about 10 mins. Line was significantly longer when we left about an hour later.

How do you access this ghost kitchen? On food delivery app?

I had never been to Hokkaido on trips to Japan myself, but after reading some recent posts from Frank Shyong’s Substack, I have pinned so many things to try when I do.

I went directly to their websites, weirdly there are two, and they both have ordering portals. Scheduled pickups both times as I am only about 10 minutes away. The Hokkaido Soup Curry portal has the sandwich and the box of zangi on it, the Hokkaido Fried Chicken portal had no mention of the soups.

That ink sofrito is so good. When I went to Holbox many years ago I thought instantly that pulpo taco as easily one of the best tacos in LA. It probably still is just not mentioned enough in comparison to asada, and birria
