Max & Helen's - Larchmont Village

Absolutely vile food at The Pantry. I can’t stand that place. Dupars, on the other hand, makes the best pancakes in town.

Du-Par’s charges $22 for bacon and eggs.

I’m not sure why everyone is complaining about the prices. I haven’t been because (1) I hate lines and waiting; and (2) it’s not my neighborhood and I’m never in the area.

But the prices seem equivalent to other restaurants offering similar food. For instance, I am going to be in the vicinity of Huckleberry Cafe in Santa Monica next week and it doesn’t seem any less expensive than Max and Helen’s. And Max and Helen’s seems a lot nicer place to hang out than Huckleberry Cafe – which has no booths and where you have to go up to the counter to order. Prices are also on par with similar items at Factor’s and I’m guessing that the food is probably several notches above Factor’s (albeit not as varied – one thing I like about Factor’s is the ability to get virtually anything I want, including on my last visit perfectly al dente broccoli, which was simple, but which made me quite happy).

Also it seems to me that there is somewhat of an overlap between people who complain about food prices and people who claim that restaurants exploit and underpay their workers. Alas especially in these inflationary times, there is no free lunch . . .

I personally would be thrilled if Max and Helen’s came to my neighborhood or if there was one in every airport in America.

I have to say all this kvetching makes me want to try it lol but driving from Brentwood to Larchmont is not high on my list of fun activities.

Ok I went today with clear heart and open mind.

It was really good. Especially the pancake, waffles, home fries, cheeseburger. Definitely one of the best pancakes I’ve had - it’s a counter point to the chewy mochi like yangs kitchen pancake (which is incredible) as a thick pillowy pancake. The waffle tastes like sourdough - great chew and flavor. Also up there as one of the best waffles. Don’t even need syrup.

We ordered a lot of food and it came out quick.

Hot chocolate is incredibly thick. Feels like dessert. It’s good just heavy.

Patty melt was good but everything else overshadowed it.

Total bill for 4 was $230 after tax and tip - we ordered the equivalent of food for 6-7 people. Cause fatties.

you must be in coma now!

Honestly not that bad when considering LA restaurant prices right now. $60pp is certainly more than you’d spend at a diner, but significantly less than what you’d spend at almost any other place serving a similar level of food.

you’re absolutely right, that doesn’t exist in Larchmont Village. thank god someone came in to fill the void with $14.50 milkshakes. by “anywhere” i would assume you’d understand the scope is the greater LA area and not, say, literally anywhere–like your living room.

I happened to walk by today and “affordable” in that neighborhood is a pretty dubious concept. Rosenthal probably meant “we won’t jack prices up as high as Larchmont would allow.”

Max & Helen’s DMed me to invite me in after I commented on a post. That was December 23. I responded very politely the same day. I have since followed up 3 times. They are ghosting me (I can see that they have read at least some of my messages). Here’s the full conversation to avoid any suggestions that maybe I’m leaving something out.

I never expected to be invited in for a meal. That was such a gracious offer! But offering and then ghosting is kind of shitty, no?

Being ghosted. On an invitation to eat. At a diner.

This runs the entire gamut of human emotions.

I wouldn’t give up yet, but you may have better luck stopping by in person. Are you sure the initial outreach wasn’t AI?
