May 2026 Rundown

I feel like I know over 10 ppl who went to mountain house this weekend it must be a hotspot.

One of my friends went twice over the Memorial Day weekend lol

Maybe because the new NYTimes top 100 included the branch in Flushing. That was the kick in the pants we needed to drive to Rowland Heights.

A second branch is opening in Monterey Park next month.

I love how clean the broth of that fish looks. I can’t wait to try (or retry?) this place.

The fish looks fantastic, I knew we should have ordered that, next time! Definitely be back, so much more to try

Nice! Those are so good. I always get them, maybe two. Haha

The space has sat empty for the past two years when they’re not around. We started going last year and have been about once a month this year since we can walk over and they frequently get us seated without a reservation at open. Without asking we get the same server every time who is an absolute pro, atmosphere is the real draw here. Seems like buzz has picked up in the second half of this season. Cash only business that is almost always fully booked, they sometimes talk about market produce but I don’t get the impression their CoG is exceptionally high, you can probably work out the economics. I do wonder if they own the building or have a benefactor, they are the type of folks that know everyone worth knowing that walks through the door.

We went early to the Domaine party at Etoile last Sunday and it was great to see Jill making the best of what turned out to be a rapid ending. It was our first time making the trek and I was so impressed by the space and consistent vision through various service items. A lot of fun bubbles being opened and poured. Pop-up serving food didn’t do it for any of us, hoping to return for the actual kitchen.

Dumpling pop-up at Baby Bistro by Virgil that works the Peads & Barnetts stand was smashing. We were early to that as well and glad to be, the line picked up quick and I got the impression they did not expect such an onslaught. The pork dumplings were an obvious standout, but the whole menu was great. The pickled veg served with both the pork and mushroom dumplings was an unexpected highlight. R O’Neil had a great showing of their current wines and we had some fun glasses of Spanish whites from Mortal Room. BB have a really nice scene going on over there and I am always so glad to see how many kids are running around at the courtyard events. We will be looking forward to more of those dumplings.

Do hit L’Etoile when you can. Possibly the best of the current bistros imho. Going tonight!

I’m mad I missed Maison Nico popping up there. That guy makes insanely good pate en croute.

Tacos al vapor and kabob combo at Molly Kabob. The guy also does wings as well as a Cornish game hen. I wasn’t sure what was available on a Saturday afternoon. He says, “I can make it all”. Getting the tacos (cachete, which reminded me texturally of the arrachera from Asadero) is great as you wait for the kabobs. I’ve been frustrated with the Figueroa/Chavez kabob row in the past, most recently after a 40 minute standing wait for a mediocre plate and mayo-dominant shawarma at one of the tables; grilling the meat to order takes time, so having a couple tacos while you chill at the table here helps quite a bit. A very nice snap on the exterior of the lule-style beef. A very pleasant experience.

Same. Didn’t have a great experience at Farhod, preferred Baba. Bread is a real weak point, not sure why Farhod uses low quality tortillas and not sangak or lavash.

You tried the Chinese skewer guys, XJ BBQ? Or the Lagman guy?

I’m sure I’ll never make it over, but is this row near the Orsini apt complex?

I tried the Xinjiang guys. Great taste on their Big Plate of Chicken (Da Pang Ji). I too was underwhelmed by Farhod - the bread issue looms large for them. But the Azerbaijan dudes further south know what they’re doing. Love hearing all the languages (Russian, Kyrgyz, Mandarin, Farsi) freely intermingling here. #SilkRoadFoodLA

Almost every Central Asian Republic is represented here (holler @EattheWorldLA )! Safety-wise, that stretch of Figueroa is becoming so popular and (illegally) double-parked at this point that the city might be forced to take action any day now…

On Figueroa (stall are all along the west side of the street), just south of Cesar Chavez…

I really like Baba: their setup is efficient, the meat is great (Baba mix kabob rules), and the Chavez location can help you avoid that Figueroa double-up parking mess that’s been mentioned. I’ll definitely try XJ - thanks for the rec! Lagman is not very exciting, but I do like how “Asman” makes me think of Cosmo Kramer.

Udupi Palace. This place has been around forever! The food is pretty average, but average Southern Indian food is yummy.

Did the lamb schwarma get dressed like that or did you pour the sauce on? I’ve only ordered the chicken there.

Central Asian/Colombian night market @ Sunset/Chavez x Fig. Double park central! Nothing here for me to eat but certainly this a unique experience in LA like Guatemalan Night Market and Salvadoran Corridor market.
I found parking by the overpass on Sunset
