^^^^ there’s a vendor selling this national dish
I enjoyed it. The lettuce did slide a bit but not a big problem; the bun held.
Came like this. Only add on was a spicy sauce on the side.
When did you go? I don’t think they were open this weekend
Yea this was earlier this month with several dear friends. Not this last weekend. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Satan pizza has changed since then
Lynx was closed this weekend? I also don’t see any reservations for the upcoming week.
Truly boggles the mind…
(For the record, I genuinely want to try it before it inevitably closes)
You could have done the Kyrgyz lemonade stand… No meat there.
It’s the Kazakhstani lady selling plov…
Coming in just under the wire for May as early in the month we went to Colorado for Dr. Ebeth’s commencement. During her Colorado years she worked at Basta, a wonderful Boulder restaurant. The chef and owner, Kelly Whittaker and his wife Erica, have since developed an enterprise, https://iehospitality.com/, comparable to Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor. They have a two Michelin star restaurant in Denver, https://www.thewolfstailor.com/, Basta, https://www.bastaboulder.com/, is a bib gourmand, and Hey Kiddo, https://www.hk-oy.com/, is Michelin recommended. Plus they are really nice people.
We couldn’t get into Basta on the actual commencement day as I didn’t book far enough in advance so we went to Hey Kiddo. It is a Korean fusion place; Kelly and Deuki Hong are friends and I believe Deuki helped him develop the menu. We started with the chicken liver mousse and Caesar salad,
We followed this with fried chicken, potato pave, and milk rolls,
and pork belly bo ssam,
Then we had dessert, a rarity in our family (not really into sweets),
The day after commencement we were able to get into Basta. Started with oysters,
moved onto delicious smoked olives, piada with burrata, salumi and several pickles,
Had to have a clam pizza,
.There was this wonderful grain dish which I don’t remember details of,
followed by the main, a perfectly grilled pork tomahawk - and I mean perfectly grilled,
accompanied by polenta and greens,
We had dessert again, an exotic panna cotta,
It was a wonderful trip.
Kelly and Erica are opening a small place, seven seats, in the Arts District next spring. It will undoubtedly be great!
Congratulations!
Connie and Ted’s:
I don’t know if shrimp really goes particularly well w/ chilaquiles, but I couldn’t fault either part separately. Salsa was great. Partner loved his omelette. Dining companions seemed to enjoy their “croque Connie” and lobster roll. Not pictured: Parker House rolls. (Harry’s) Strawberry milk bread was tasty but not needed w/ all the other food.
Will be sad to lose this palce (and someone who seemed like a manager type mentioned incidentally that she is looking for work).
Dining friend wanted to go to Mamie afterward. My pic of the sandwich stinks, so here are pics of the cafe interior:
We got the Fiorella, which we ate several hrs afterward as a light dinner (I was still stuffed from C&T’s). Quite good, although I think our focaccia might’ve been a wee bit overbaked (or perhaps the slight burnt flavor was coming from one of the other ingredients?). Would certainly return, and the portion is truly enormous, making this a high QPR sandwich at $17. Having said that, I don’t think I’ll dreaming about this sandwich as I do about Lorenzo…
Not pictured: apricot canele. I have no idea what I’m looking for in a canele. This was very soft (incl the exterior), and there was something else about the texture that I didn’t love. Flavor was enjoyable, but not something I would get again. They also one w/ matcha jam/custard/something.
Does anyone know the people behind this place? This does not strike me as a mom-and-pop business…
I met the owner and spoke very briefly with him. I don’t think it’s a chain. It’s an Italian guy who really loves his grandma and her food. He was previously in the fine dining scene.
Chef Michael Cimarusti of Providence…
Mikael Choukroun.
I read a tip somewhere to order the Hindu meal, so I ordered what American A*******s calls “Asian vegetarian.” The lentils were really good and actually spicy. The dish included butter and cream, so it was kind of weird that everything else was vegan, but I guess they assemble these things modularly. Anyway it was more the kind of food I’d like to eat on a flight than the chicken or pasta that most passengers got.
“Sorry, you cannot post the word A******s, it is not allowed.” Presumably an aftereffect of that spammer we had a while back.
Abernethy’s for dinner before LA Opera’s opening night of “The Magic Flute”…
Multi-talented singer-songwriter-chef Andy Allo is in the midst of her residency at Abernethy’s. Her Cameroonian roots really made an impression on us. This was a shockingly great pre-show meal. The Koki Duo (Cameroonian tamale) was an outstanding starter…
Chef Allo’s Grilled Chicken & Peanut Stew was comforting, even for those who are not familiar with Cameroonian fare (such as myself).
The Guinness-Braised Short Rib tasted just as great as they sound. And do NOT ignore her outrageously delicious hot sauce!
Should’ve clarified that I meant the people behind Mamie. ![]()
Okay, that makes a lot of sense (+ same info in the article that @robert linked). The place seemed like a well-oiled machine w/ a good amount of staff, so I assume whoever was behind it (even if “just” one guy) must’ve had some significant experience.
This place is a nice addition, and I’d love one w/i walking distance of me. ::sigh::
Is that short rib served over a savory dutch baby? Looks amazing! The koki duo as well!
tried dtown pizzeria last night based on the board’s recc. it’s good pizza! i would definitely get it again. i liked that you can order halves; we got an original 1946 cheese pizza and a meatball pizza. i enjoyed the airy crust, the crispy cheesy bits, and the peppery notes throughout.
maybe it’s because laurel supply across the street was packed with diners on a sunday evening, but it’s sort of easy to see why they might not draw in a lot of neighborhood business. there are big vinyl banners out front talking about their awards, their free parking. it’s conspicuous in the neighborhood.
take down all the signage, skip-trowel plaster and whitewash the interior, double the prices.
Yorkshire pudding possibly?
