Cortina’s indeed does make a great meatball sub. If you’re ever in Anaheim definitely worth a stop. They also sell frozen meatballs with tomato sauce in vacuum sealed packet. Excellent easy week night dinner.
Gwen stopped doing their meatball sandwiches right? Those were some of the best I’ve ever had. I usually just go for the boring classic Italian deli ones like Eastside Deli or Giamela’s, but if you’re driving around Busy Bee in San Pedro is pretty great in general. Also a wild card, if they’re still making it, the meatball sando at Beachwood Brewery in Huntington Beach was bonkers.
Little Coyote meatball sub is damn near perfection.
Gwen was so good
Gwen’s sandwiches were so legit.
Prime in El Segundo has meatball and chicken parm sandwiches. Santa Monica and West LA definitely don’t. I am also a fan of their meatballs but haven’t tried the sandwich yet.
Drove a quick back and forth to Vegas to check out Postcard from Earth. One afternoon, one night, one morning, second afternoon. Didn’t do anything too crazy, some vintage shops, driving and a lot of walking. Put one dollar into a slot machine.
Yaw Farm Coffee Roaster
Only takeout here so I wandered around the parking lot for a half hour drinking my bubble gum
Palace Station Oyster Bar
Showed up after coffee and waited five minutes, maybe because it was morning but a lot of regulars sitting at the bar
Oysters
Bloody Mary
House Étouffée - heat level seven for that breakfast zing!

How was Esther’s Kitchen? It’s been on my list forever. What LA place would you compare it to?
It’s solid with good pasta.
Yeah I had a great time. I wanted to check out La Strega too, know someone who went a few weeks ago and enjoyed it.
Had takeout Thai food at a local Thai place in Pasadena, Beau Thai. We ordered pad Thai, boat noodles, papaya salad, tom yum, and kai kua. Boat noodles stood out for me with a sour/spicy broth and exceptionally tender cuts of beef. Pretty good food for the area.
Mustard Griddled Patties, Cheese, Tomato, Raw Onion, Lettuce, Pickles, Sauce
Because that’s what a hamburger’s all about. Makes having to go to LAX twice in one week not too bad.
Is it spicy. I love their sandwiches but they DOUSE them with chili sometimes… even the non-spicy ones. ugh.
Hi @Dommy
I don’t remember a lot of heat but we’re ordering Ggiata for a lunch meeting Thursday so I’ll get back to you on that.
Okay… last time I ordered them (NOT SPICY) for A dodgers game… I ended up having to get another $20 beer!! NOT COOL…
After that I went back my usual Oubei Sushi and Dodgers… LOL!!
Comedor Tenchita
Sundays only in Mid-City.
Oaxacan. They have specials every week. Check out their IG page for the latest.
I think some of these dishes are hard to find. The amount of ingredients can vary from 20-30! Insane the amount of work that goes in for these sauces. There is also a tepache stand as well. One of the ladies told me to come back and try the higaditos, an egg dish. I’ll be back. Super nice family operation. Looks like grandma, mom, and aunties running the kitchen and the daughters taking orders.
There is probably a lot more of these backyard spots and turning out great Mexican food. 106 Underground and Ponchos comes to mind. I am all for it. I think maybe the quality is probably higher targeting the home sick paisanos.
You made it before me! Will you be going back? Did you try the tepache or any atoles?
Definitely will be back. Especially since they have different specials every week. Did not try any of the tepaches or atoles.
Went to Comedor a few weeks ago! It was fun and their setup somewhat larger than I’d anticipated. Had the molotes, chile rellenos, and taquitos coloradito. I liked the arroz y frijoles the best and the tepaches guy was going around with trays of samples so we got to try all of the flavors.
