Agree on the portion being too small.

nancy’s caesar - egg, leek & anchovy crostini
is there a better salad in the city?
celery heart & shaved black truffle, truffled brie crostino
could have done with less truffle and more brie
butternut squash tortelloni with dates & radicchio
great balance of sweet and bitter
cioppino rock cod, scallops, clams & rouille
i don’t think i’ve seen cioppino on the menu before. pretty good for la
had one of my better meals here the other night.
the uni lardo crostini was excellent. the dressed spring onions on top seemed superfluous at first but when eaten together provided a nice bit of acid that makes sense. much better than the uni lardo I had recently at marea.
the spaghetti aglio e olio now comes with two huge carabineros. the heads provided almost too much juice for the amount of pasta but I wasn’t complaining and spooned it all up.
nancy’s caesar is still my favorite salad in la.
and the gelati with candied kumquats and almonds was a great finish.

Beautiful!
Nancy’s Caesar looks to be more like giant crostini with Caesar toppings and lightly dressed greens on the side.
Beautifully plated.
the Nancy’s Caesar has a little salad on one side of the plate, and the vinaigrette of that is a garlic-parmesan dressing. The whole Caesar component is on the other side, in the form of a large crostini [sic]
$234 (before wine, tax, and tip?) maybe kind of steep for many people?
Calf Brains and White Asparagus
Fun quick bite menu posted outside so wandered in
The grappa reminded me of the last time I was on open land at altitude, running around with a border collie, climbing rocks, driving the grades
Vermouth Soda
Fett’unta
Preserved Vegetables - fennel, shallot & white asparagus
Calf’s Brain Ravioli - burro e limone
Rosemary Olive Oil Cakes - monini olive oil gelato & rosemary brittle
Meyer Lemon Gelato & Apricot Sorbetti
Capovilla Grappa de Traminer 2012
cinco jotas jamon iberico & 24-month prosciutto di parma, weiser family farms market melons
first time seeing jamon iberico on the menu, excellent with the melons.
Where’s the rest of the food?
Damn. This restaurant is 18 years old now. But tonight’s meal was probably my favorite ever. Couldn’t find a flaw in any of the six dishes. Wine list is unparalleled for quality Italian wines. This is still my favorite Italian restaurant in LA by a large margin.
what’d you get???
Chidori kale salad. 5/5
Prosciutto and Warren pear. 5/5
Bavette with cacio e pepe. 5/5
Linguine with clams. 5/5
Grilled yellowtail. 5/5
Jimmy Nardello peppers. 5/5
Also want to say — the pasta was seriously al dente. Love it.
Improved a lot since before Covid. Too bad so many of the bottles are over $200. How are they ever going to sell all those Barolos? Insane.
I’ll tell you how. Often we go to Osteria Mozza or Chi Spacca and tell the somm to pour a blind bottle of red wine under X dollars into a decanter so we can guess what it is. Every single time, they pour a wine that costs exactly X dollars. Almost every single time, it’s high-end nebbiolo or sangiovese.* Almost every single time, I guess the other. They invariably say: ”see, nebbiolo finishes with tannins but sangiovese finishes with acid.” I think to myself: “I’d like to see you call it blind.” What makes it more challenging is they typically use this as an opportunity to pour older wines, which I find more difficult to distinguish (e.g., the tannins are much softer).
*One time we set X low enough that they chose an Etna Rosso. Somehow, Peony guessed correctly.
I would guess are you outliers. Doubt many folks show up and ask for a blind bottle for $300. Although if money is no object or you trust the somm to give you a bottle they think you would enjoy rather than the one with the highest mark-up, this could be a fun idea.
I bet the wine buyers behind that list do well in blind tastings.
