Restaurants - Delivery or Pick Up Options

Thanks! I’ll keep these in mind on my next visit…perhaps a pie bang bang featuring Republique and Superfine…

i don’t remember posting in this thread. but i’ve thought long and hard about going to the park tonight after what happened to that chorale up in washington got publicized: 45 out of 60 infected with 2 deaths. but yeah, most of the organized programs offering food to folks in the greater pasadena area right now have shut down. anyone still doing it would be… er, un-organized programs like me and a guy named mike who’s been doing this for 20 years after a homeless person killed his little brother. his mom used to do all the cooking after she passed away and now he caters.

many of the homeless qualify for food stamps (EBT) with cards that can be used primarily at grocery stores and fast food places (but not mcdonalds for some reason). fast food is out (no car for drive up window), and $180 a month doesn’t go too far when the average meal including sandwich, fries & drink is probably $8 nowadays, and today happens to be the last day of a 31 day month. the cash portion of government relief typically gets spent early in the month renting a motel room for a night or two.

one person i know living outside bought a bike and is doing ubereats, doordash, what have you. the problem is that he has nowhere to recharge his phone now that all the public libraries are closed. there used to be a few fast food places that offered outlets as well, but of course they are no longer an option as well. i left a power strip plugged into the outlet on my patio. for him - and him only - i let him come by after dark and plug the phone in overnight to charge, and he picks it up early in the morning.

the shutdown of food programs, the lack of access for recharging phones and the shutting down of all public restrooms at 8pm (except in local parks where there is no TP) are among the biggest problems for people living outside (which is how a lot of them refer to themselves) right now.

EDIT: i did in fact go out to the park and we had roughly double the number of people from last week. they were very accommodating in terms of social distancing for my sake; i’d load up a plate, put it down, back up and let someone get their plate. but since they pretty much hang out together anyway, they broke up into their normal groups and ate together.

according to the grapevine, some churches are continuing their food programs during the week.

Update. That was quick.

The landscape is changing so rapidly, it can be a challenge for bureaucracies. I’m not the biggest fan of Garcetti, but I’m glad he came down on the side of being creative and loosening rules when possible.

In the end, I think if everyone is practicing social distancing and proper hygiene, it will go a long way in letting these non-standard set ups continue to operate.

Got lazy and ordered delivery from Window at American Beauty on UberEats. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the car was driving directly by our place to drop off an order in Mar Vista, at which point it then doubled back to us in Santa Monica. Everything was still delicious, but lukewarm fries are so sad.

Are there scams taking advantage of all the deliveries?

Just had a voicemail from a woman saying she had just left delivery at room number #. She sounded Korean-American. I get a lot of LA number scam calls and I don’t pick up on LA numbers anymore if I don’t recognize them. It’s obvious they are scams because I haven’t lived in LA for donkey years.

The only reason I think it may not be a scam is that she did call twice so not a robo call. I’d feel bad if she is legit and if I don’t call back–she’s going to get a really irate call from a hungry customer.

Did she also leave which delivery company or restaurant? If so, I would assume a legit call.

No, just simply that she had delivered the food at room location.

In any case, she’s probably heard from the customer by now. Hope it worked out for her. But I didn’t want to chance calling back if it was a sneaky ploy.

Did someone mention Clementine in Century City?

Yep, my weekday pickup spot. They’ve always had Curbside Pickup w/a separate phone line dedicated to pickup/credit card orders - press #2. My office is not in a commercial area with restaurants and shops - spending 30 minutes in traffic & finding parking in Westwood Village or BH is not an appealing lunchtime. I call Clementine Curbside in the morning and swoop by on my way to work.

Daily Soups w/House Baked Bread, perfect little Quiches, Sweets, Salads, Deli Case, Heat-at-Home Dinners (chicken pot pie, meat loaf, mashed taters, shepherds pie, etc), Sandwiches - my hubby always goes for the Rare Roast Beef Sandwich w/Horseradish too @Rachel. I like the Build-Your-Own Grilled Cheese.

How do I :hearts: soup? Clementine lets me count the ways.

Chilled Avocado Corn (seasonal)

Tomato Basil / Chicken Vegetable

Tomato Eggplant Israeli Couscous

Chicken Potato Leek

Tuscan Bean

Beef Borscht

Chicken Posole (the hominy is hidden) :hot_pepper:

Hearty Black Bean (Vegan)

Moroccan Chickpea

Hungarian Mushroom

Soup + Half Sandwich - Grilled Vermont Cheddar Cheese + Spicy Tortilla Soup (w/sides of crunchy tortilla strips, diced avocado, cotija)

Split Pea + Ham

Chicken + White Bean

Meaty Meat Chili, Cheese, Sour Cream, Garlic Toast :hearts:

Don’t mistake their regular menu item “Mom’s Chili” for this. “Mom’s” is fine but tastes more like Suburban Mom’s Chili (chunky tomatoes, beans). This Meaty Chili rich w/both Chuck (maybe brisket?) & Ground Beef is getting into Texas Chili Champ territory, imo. :hearts:

Believe it or not they make even more soups! Soup Lovers. They offer two fresh soups a day - one is always Vegan or Vegetarian - plus more soups in the frozen case. We must’ve done a DoTM Soup, because I have A LOT of pictures of soup.

3 Quiche Flavors - Bacon Leek / Mushroom Scallion / Feta Asparagus or Spinach (depending on season)

I :hearts: these Mini Quiches. They bake them a perfect amount of time, so the filling is still soft & firm-custardy when reheated, by you or them (they’ll ask) and the crust is buttery & flaky.

Rare Roast Beef w/Horseradish, Rustic Bread

(internet photo)

Roast Beef Caliente - Grilled House Roasted Top Round, Avocado, Red Onions, Pickled Jalapeños, Lettuce, Mayo, Toasted Rustic Bread

Classic Smoked Turkey - Roasted Tomato Mayo, Avocado, Super Greens, Wheat Levain Bread

Grilled Pimento Cheese

Cold Case + Salads

Chicken Pot Pie (heat-at-home)

Good crust. Good filling. Could use more gravy/broth.

Pastries, Breads & Sweets

Key Lime Pie

Chocolate Chip Cookie :hearts:

One of TheCookie’s Favorite Cookies - Crispy, Chewy, Sweet, Salty, Buttery, Semi-Sweet Chocolatey.

Peanut Butter

It’s more cookie goodness.

The management really know how to run a super busy, multi-service restaurant efficiently and in a small space. The service is always friendly.

Good tip @Rachel about the Curbside Service being in front on Ensley, right now. When it’s in the back lot patience during peak hours is required.

Edit: they do Holiday Meals as well, the most current being Passover & Easter.

Stay Safe & Yummy!

Nice report @TheCookie. At first as I was scrolling through, I was thinking, “Wow! @TheCookie has ascended to FTC legendary eating status like @J_L @PorkyBelly! How did you eat all of this for lunch?!” :open_mouth:

And then I realized you were sharing multiple meals.

I love Clementine as well. Some great items there!

Echoing the love for Clementine. I’ve only really had their incredible chocolate chip cookies, the current situation is a great excuse to try more of their offerings.

Funny @Chowseeker1999! Yah, I’m the quiche & tropical ice tea for breakfast, half sandwich & cup of soup for lunch girl… with the occasional cookie splurge. This is probably years of pickups. They have so much more to offer inside, but I didn’t want to be too wordy. I miss Clementine because I work remotely from home more now, but they saved me from boring lunches and delivery fees for years.

FYI they do Holiday Meal Packages as well - the most current being Passover & Easter.

saw the hamentashen in the photo!

I guess it’s going to be a solo Passover over here (although my cousins back east are setting up a remote ZOOM Seder next Wednesday nite).

We’ll see how it goes. Unfortunately they want to start @ sundown EST and I have a late deadline…so I’ll have to stream it in the background while I work. But, hey—technology will bring the extended family together for a holiday meal (and thankfully I won’t have to eat brisket)

Fozia Auntie is continuing to hold it down at Zam Zam Market in Hawthorne. Order your combos in advance. Mashallah.

I’ve been taking a lot of food pics recently but this was the first full meal I haven’t made myself in 3 weeks. It was inhaled the moment I exited decontamination.

Thanks for the great write-up, @TheCookie. You’ll be delighted to hear that they’re still doing Grilled Cheese Month this April!

Zodiac theme this year: ASTROLOCHEESE: ARIES

young manchego, dry-cured spanish chorizo, smoky sweet peppers on country white bread.
