I’ve been back for happy hour another couple times. The food and drinks are still fantastic. But there’s one thing nagging at me, which is that it’s impossible to put together even a semi light meal.
Wish they would add a single veggie or something. But I imagine they don’t for a variety of reasons - whether it be food cost, prep time, or just not wanting to make happy hour too much of a substitute for the regular menu.
Yeah, one would think LA would be a great market for healthier menu options. Off topic tip: at Bavel and Saffy’s you can get crudites for the dips (off menu).
Food is still fantastic! But the menu is more limited than before, and the wine list is almost non existent. Delicious dinner nevertheless. I am worried about their survival, not that busy 6:30 pm on a Saturday. Great food, one of the best restaurants in LA to my palate.
that used to be their wine list, but on Saturday it was not available as “they are reorganizing their cellar”. I am used to seeing this place buzzing more on a random Tuesday night than it was last Saturday. Something feels off, I am getting worried about their survival. Food and service were as excellent as ever though.
They’ve had a lot of executive chef turnover. Jeremy Fox, the chef after, the current chef who leans more Mexico-inspired. Their cooking is as good as ever but also worried they are on the path to closing which is sad since this is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. I was there last week (Thursday night), and the restaurant was 85% empty
I liked the chef that followed Fox, he was making some crazy creative food! I’m blanking on his name, but I think he moved on to do private pop ups with his wife or something? Anyone know?
EDIT: Andy Doubrava! Looks like he is the chef at The Catbird Seat in Nashville (one star)
It’s just really hard to follow a Legend. How many Lakers announcers did we have following Chick Hearn before it settled down? I think Elijah DeLeon is pretty talented -personally I wished they’d let him really mix up the menu more. Having just a couple protein mains and just rotating the garnishes get’s old after a while. They need to do something to mix it up more IMO. I also want to tell people to support them. What Rustic Canyon does well (Apps, Veg, Sml plates, Cocktails) they do VERY well
I hope not & it makes me uncomfortable to say things like that when I don’t have all the information because I don’t want to make things worse. Talking to the staff didn’t feel like they were worried and I specifically asked about how business was how busy they were. They just said it was hot & cold.
The food is still very good and I am happy to have them in the neighborhood so hopefully it turns around for them. An LA Times review or similar certainly wouldn’t hurt.
