i believe that in Kyoto, Ten No Meshi is a tempura concept by Kushikatsu Tanaka, which itself is a chain from Osaka that has a lot of stores throughout Japan. i’ve not been. if I’m not mistsaken, think that Kushikatsu Tanaka once had a location on Sawtelle.
Yes! Or, at least, some sort of kushikatsu place. IIRC, it was even in the same strip of stores!
I really liked the kushikatsu place…
Pretty great breakfast burrito at Sidoh.
Back at Indigo Cow and this time they had the special. Yaki-imo brûlée special. Milk ice cream in a cup with a layer of Japanese sweet potato puree and then brûlée. This was excellent!
Walked by last night after dinner at Torisoba Sumiya.
Their instagram says they’re opening this month! https://www.instagram.com/tennomeshi.la.official/
Not Sawtelle Japantown, but the “West LA Sawtelle” neighborhood council is involved….
Was driving by what I guess is the Bundy triangle last Fri and saw a lot of tents. Drive by yesterday and saw some signage:
Sun Nong Dan is coming.
I saw that the other day. Cool to have a hotspot further north away from the Olympic-adjacent chaos.
I’d prefer Seong Buk Dong or like 50+ other places from Ktown, but I suppose beggars can’t be choosers.
Any poop on “The Mulberry” opening at 1800 Sawtelle?
Following is from Culinary Agents:
Opening October 2025 in the heart of Sawtelle, The Mulberry is a modern Korean American restaurant reimagining the neighborhood bistro. Our opening team brings deep culinary pedigree from Benu, Marea, Daniel, French Laundry, abc Jean-Georges, 53 at MoMA, and the world of Anthony Bourdain.*
Our menu blends Korean heritage with precise technique and seasonal California ingredients, emphasizing fermentation, fire, and flavor. Dishes are playful yet grounded, honoring tradition while offering bold new interpretations of Korean American comfort food.
The dining room, designed in collaboration with Matt Winter, evokes swanky elegance and warm hospitality. Guests can expect a full bar, a curated wine list, and a standout pastry program.
At our core, The Mulberry is about craft, discipline, and joy. We’re building a tight-knit kitchen culture that values excellence, pride, and shared ambition. This is a rare opportunity to join one of LA’s most anticipated openings from the ground up.
what the hell the world of Anthony Bourdain mean?
Is this AI writing?
So this looks to be replacing Plan Check? Explains why the place is tented….
That’s going to be quite the Korean corner since I think Sun Nong Dan is pretty much right across the street?
Planet earth, my friend. Planet earth…
dunno if my eyes deceived me but while passing by, i think i saw a nicely renovated space with an L-shaped bar left of blackbeard’s crafts
In the previous Tempura House location???
Either that or the space between it and Blackbeard’s.
Ramen Chikuma finally opens. Line was very long, even at 8PM tonight, so will try it another night.
