Just curious what makes any part of a city (or small city like PA) boring or exciting as we might have very different parameters to evaluate?
Comparing other SF neighborhoods like the Mission, North Beach, Chinatown, and the Castro. Those neighborhoods have a lot of “character” and “personality” to them.
That was just a brief observation walking down 24th. East of Mission is an entire world difference than west of Castro. Although they are only like a mile or less apart. (my guesstimate could be wrong). I would live in Noe given the chance. Coffeeshop, bookstore, grocery store, cleaners, corner shop, bakery, deli are all on one street. Plus it’s nice to live in a quiet area but still be close.
I’ll be back soon. Love exploring the different neighborhoods in SF. Still need to visit the Asian Art Museum, California Academy of Sciences, Lands End Trail, do a run across the Golden Gate Park.
Take a walk on Church Street which feels different than 24th street for Noe Valley (if you are interested in cookbooks Omnivore Books os outstanding)
For me, when almost all the businesses are for high-income people, I’d rather go somewhere else.
Tried Sirene in the old Boot & Shoe space with a couple of friends. Seafood restaurant from The Morris team.
Pricy for a Jura but exceptional. Modest markup.
Seadood tower was crab, shrimp, oysters, uni, might be forgetting something.
Shrimp sausage and lobster-duck “mortadella.” Really good. Had a couple of orders of house bread.
Dumpling. Need to try again.
Whole Petrale sole. Excellent. Had the kitchen debone it.
Greens and sunchoke came with the sole. Nice.
Chartreuse slushie. Didn’t taste.
Buckwheat doughnuts were hot and delicious.
Great place. Full to overflowing on Saturday at 5:45. Make a reservation. Looking forward to returning soon.
Went to La Santaneca last night. Glad to find the curtido was as good as ever. Still one of the best cheap meals in SF.
Good Mong Kok. Sesame Balls (red bean). Still warm!
Rice Roll Express. Scallion and cilantro rice roll. One of the best things about Manhattan Chinatown is the rice roll street carts. Yeah you can them at dim sum restaurants and to-go dim sum but it’s a different style and enjoyed with tea/company. My go to spot for a quick breakfast in SF Chinatown. Mentioned this before but the scallion pancakes at Hon’s Wonton is also pretty incredible.
Molinari’s veggie special on Dutch crunch
Blue Bottle Ferry Building.
Calibur double cheeseburger - not going to change your life but the execution is so perfect that i feel it is worth mentioning - achieves the platonic ideal of a californian burger, all the components feel in perfect balance. fries are made with beef tallow but just passable…
June pizza - the dough quality is very high. the slices they serve after 9pm still need significant work in terms of mastering their reheating process
What’s the current rate in LA ? (And did you buy any ?)
I must try this. That sounds AMAZING (and to be able to avoid all the hassle of a restaurant…).
$14 for gaviotas, $9 for mara de bois (smaller clamshell) at the farmers markets
EDIT: it was $15 today at SMFM
didn’t buy them, so no idea how they held up in transport or whether they were shipped prior to peak ripeness. as far as i could tell, the entire store had something like 2-4 larger plastic containers’ worth… so maybe they were hand-delivered or couriered
Harry’s doesn’t sell unripe berries.
Tried Hong Kong Cafe in the 99 Ranch mall in Richmond.
酸菜水煮鱼 was really good, very spicy and sour. I don’t expect such intense chile heat or mala at a Hong Kong place. Seemed like it got less spicy as I ate it, I think I was spooning off the mala chile oil. Only got halfway through the bowl before I ran out of fish, maybe I’ll get some more to add to the leftovers.
梅菜扣肉 méi cài kòu ròu was the tastiest I’ve had in a while. Could have used more preserved vegetable but the pork belly was cooked very well. Too bad Ton Kiang is gone.
Chow fun with pork rib and black bean had all good ingredients but didn’t really come together as a noodle dish.
Pea leaf was good. Huge portion.
Crixa Cakes’ last day of business is Saturday. They may reopen elsewhere.
Had a couple Outta Sight slice of pepperoni pizza yesterday. Chose it because it visually looked like L’industrie in NYC (not on L’industrie’s level though). Sugar in the dough… learning I’m just not a fan of the dollar NY slice shop style, because I’m turned off by the sweetness of the dough that comes from added sugar. It makes it taste processed. I also thought the pizza was over-salted, like it was sprinkled in with the cheese. I don’t know where it was added, but tasted like a late addition so it didn’t intensify the flavor as salt should. It just didn’t “meld” so it tasted like an independent component on the pizza. Also, hated the mozzarella they were using, didn’t like the laced parmesan over the cheese either.
Rose Pizzeria from Berkeley is coming to Clement. Looks like the old Village Pizzeria location
Hilda and Jesse got a Michelin star. I didn’t remember hearing about it before. Eccentric hours: dinner Monday, Thursday, Friday, brunch Saturday and Sunday.
