South Bay Staples

Woori Zip needs to be on your to-eat list. It’s Ajumma in the kitchen who used to own a restaurant back in the day in Jinmi’s spot. Lots of Koreans in the know have returned here. That kimchi is spectacular and no you can’t buy a tub lol I asked for you already.

Will have to try more of the menu but honestly it’s probably up there with Jinmi as some of the best.

Obvious language barrier maybe @matthewkang can get better info and background than me.

Took one of my kids to woori zip yesterday and we both loved it. I got the uni soy sauce bibimbap (uni is hiding In a smaller bowl under the giant bowl in the picture)

and an order of the mungbean pancakes which were crazy fluffy while being super savory. Cant wait to try the rest of the menu.

Had the mung bean cakes too. Check out that crisp exterior as well!

My only frame of reference before this is Hmart/Hannam 50% off or BOGO.

Nice China cafe for the order ahead hundred flower chicken.

It was ok chicken was a little too sparse and dry. Skin was crisp and it lacked salinity some white pepper salt would’ve gone a long way. First time I had it I thought it was very good this time just ok so maybe some consistency issues

They do have a consistency issue.

Be warned: they were closed from 2:30 – 4:00 on a recent visit. Ajumma was sitting in the dining area saying, quite animated, that she was very tired. The very last time we went, they were open. I couldn’t get a clear answer due to the language barrier.

New place for me and don’t see anything posted yet. Woowa in Gardena. Sort of a pocha, but more elevated and more modern… We had a fantastic meal here tonight:

  1. Owners are amazing. Young couple. The husband does all the cooking, the wife is the hostess. You can absolutely tell they are putting their blood, sweat, and tears into the restaurant and I would love to see them succeed!
  2. Rice cakes and sausage. Pretty standard dish that my kids love. This was the only miss for me because the rice cake was a little too cooked, so wasn’t as chewy as I like. Still always a good dish for the family though.
  3. Seafood pancake. This was delicious. It’s not the traditional rendition. This batter was very light and airy, perfectly fried, but not too oily. And it was chock full of big bites of seafood - a lot of places you can tell use those bags of chopped up seafood, but this just felt higher end with small shrimp, mussels, and big calamari rings.
  4. Korean gnocchi with clams. It’s this really chewy version of sujebi that is prepped almost Italian style with olive oil and white wine, but then also has the Korean elements of zucchini and onions. But as a lover of chewy pasta, this was delicious. I could have had entire plate myself.

I suspect this place won’t be for everyone. And the menu is still in flux, but we’re gonna give it a chance and try it again soon!

I was there a few weeks ago and yes, the young couple was bright. Definitely pocha vibes with a pocha menu, imo. Dishes are like those you’d find at spots like Louders and Jilli. Cheese kimchi fried rice and rose gnocchi/sujebi were both pretty good. I’d be willing to go back when in the area but I’m also a sucker for heavy fusion pocha foods in general.

Hope they do well!

Rieras fish po boy for lent. They use fresh cod. I was really excited but it was just ok. Like their regular sandwiches more.

Proudly serving is also serving a fish sandwich they are doing a riff on the filet o fish will prolly have to try that too. Proudly serving is still making the best fried in South Bay though

Went to Zoku hoping to catch them for lunch (only time they do their awesome ramen) but got there late and did dinner instead - really glad I did because it was excellent.

Cream Cheese Tofu

Karaage

Zoku Salad

Strawberry Basque Cheesecake

Zoku has been on my list wbat are your favorite things to eat there?

It’s pretty hard to wrong - I haven’t had a bad/meh dish yet but I particularly like the tofu ramen, momo spicy, mune ume, the wings, and the zucchini. Their deserts are also really great and they rotate them out on a very regular basis. They only do in-house lunch on Sundays which is a bummer cuz that’s the only time they serve ramen but they’ve started doing to-go lunch bentos during the week that I wanna check out.

Multiple orders of kanpyo at Sushi Yoshi. I am hooked on kanpyo maki’s!!!

New mural at Crenshaw x 156th.

“Now that’s what I am f’ing talking about!!!”

Much better than the mural in Oakland which is suppose to be stylized/inspired from Mac Dre lol

Have you gotten anything else at sushi yoshi? If so, what do you like?

I think the owner is from Osaka region so battera is the move. You can get a battera appetizer before having the best Japanese curry in LA.
