That tsukune looks great at Zoku
love kanpo maki. 4 piece cut is the way to go, to me. though some famous Edomae sushi figure suggested 5 piece cut, most do 4 so you can get a good sense of the kanpyo texture (especially if it’s twisted, for example).
These are from August, but I also enjoyed everything from Zoku. Meant to return to try more and write a proper article, but never happened.
The garlic mushrooms are also very good!!
Found some time for lunch last week at Woowa for Ttoek Galbi and a post lunch pick me up at Junia.
The Tteok Galbi portion was pretty filling. I might opt for all salad and no rice next time. The juicy and well seasoned took galbi patty was cut into bite sized chunks. The offerings are sandwiches and tteok galbi for lunch.
Then to Junia after lunch for some caffeine. The place was quite busy around 2pm. Had an iced hojicha latte, while my mates had cold brews. The place has good energy to go along with their well made drinks. One of these days I’ll get the cortado mentioned by @JeetKuneBao.
Thanks for the recs HTCers.
Go Bruins!
Ate at Yori Tofu in Torrance today and it was excellent. Ordered the aged kimchi/braised mackerel (mukeunji joorim) which was really delicious though I wish it had radish (mu) in there as is typical. It came on a bubbling hot stone dish that kept it warm. Soondubu was interestingly smoky and solid while the kimchi mandu (wang mandu) was fantastic. Banchan was probably the weakest part - not bad, just kind of ho-hum. Definitely gonna go back to try more of the menu. Korean food is getting a little resurgence in Torrance!
When you account for Koreatown, Koreatown Garden Grove, Buena Park/La Palma/Fullerton, Cerritos/Norwalk, and Torrance/Gardena it’s pretty impressive (as well as massive).
OC’s Korean scene keeps getting better and better. South Bay as well maybe not quite on the level of OC. I got a feeling that a lot of Koreans in Cerritos just go to OC since it’s so close.
Any recs for kanpyo maki’s?
Santouka always good, Carlos jr tempura tendon at mitsuwa sometimes good. Today I was fooled again after a run of being pretty good Carlos jr was not very good tempura batter wasn’t good and also poorly coated additionally very little tare on the rice.
mellow tea makes a very solid boba Milk tea. Unlike a lot of places that put whole milk into their milk tea instead of milk powder etc. bobas were also very qq will be back
fosters freeze Carson such a well made dipped cone hit the spot on a 90 degree day
pho redbo has become my go to don’t what to eat restaurant it reminds me how much I actually missed eating pho there was a 3-4 year stretch where I had it only about 4-5 times a year since there was no place good that served it within reasonable driving distance. I came here twice in two days!
A couple good new additions to Promenade / PV (though it will ALWAYS be The Courtyard Mall to me). First up is Dilly D’s. I was legitimately heartbroken when Ruby’s shut down but Dilly D’s kinda fills the hole they left minus the 50’s vibe though with decidedly better food; that said, I thought Ruby’s was a-ok for what it was. This was my second trip, the first time I had pretty darn good cheeseburger. On the menu for the table this time was the breakfast burrito, crispy chicken sandwich, curly fries, and a kids chicken nugget meal. Really enjoyed it!
Followed that up with a stop at Fika Fika Creamery which serves ice cream that’s super smooth, almost soft-serve but not quite. We got the Okinawa Brown Sugar Milk and Butterfly Vanilla - which was my favorite of the two.
Requisite stop by the skating rink.
How was the breakfast burrito? Worth getting? Does it compare to other places in the south bay?
I really enjoyed it and will definitely be getting it again. Nicely cooked eggs (not at all dry), crunchy tater tots, a good amount of bacon, and the red salsa had real kick. I’d put it on par with with Riera’s (and Phanny’s on a good day) but not at Baran’s/Tigres Fuego level. One of the better breakfast burritos in the area for sure.
Alright thanks that’s good enough praise to warrant a try! Esp if the salsa is tasty.
Redwood pie best pizza in South Bay and some of the best in LA. They are baking bread now too will report back tomorrow when I try.
Alili poke since jus poke wasn’t taking orders and only allowed walk ups. Very good quality poke made our own poke bowls with things in the kitchen cucumbers, furikake, pico de gallo, avocados etc. wish the one in Torrance hadn’t closed.
Redwood pie country loaf they just started selling bread a couple weeks ago, not sure if it’s a permanent thing but he makes great bread. Great crust and pillowy interior with a lot of structure and no excessive bubbling holes. The right amount of chew and great sourdough flavor without being overpowering. Better than Tommy and Atticus’ country loaf.
Double egg breakfast sandwich one over easy fried and one scrambled with micro greens mayo, evo, and tjs italian hot sauce
Walking around MB pier and a visit to Pages bookstore had to drop by Ercoles for a burger. This is the veggie burger but what makes the burgers a banger here is they are all flame grilled versus the flat top we see that is ubiquitous across LA county

Anyone tried Nijiya curry flakes? Per package it actually cheaper but with less servings than the cubes
We are getting a cat cafe!! Hang out with cute adoptable kitties while eating some mochi . I am so excited for this. Also it’s across from Junia on Normandie. Also not too far away is the 2 hood classics, Pit Burger (new make over!) and Pollo Ala Brasa (worst parking lot!).
Wow super interesting seems to be way healthier than those curry bricks I will have to check it out next time and report back
