Awesome thanks for the explainer! Yeah google translate was saying race or to compete.
So I think we are talking about different restaurants.
I’m talking about taqueria la compita. They are a small chain of stands in the Wilmington, harbor gateway, and carson. I think they have 3 or 4 stands in the area but I’ve never been to the other ones I just know because a cargo van pulled up with more supplies and a customer asked where else they were located.
Tacos Al carbon with asada or chorizo grilled over mesquite and hand made tortillas. Red tents they basically have the exact same menu as tire shop.
No, Wilmington Night Market. PCH and Fig just off the 110. I went recently with a group of friends. Didn’t take photos sadly… but the standouts…
– Fried Quesadillas from Las Gorditas Chingonas Truck. Squash blossom, Chicharon Presando are stand outs.
– Yoana’s Fish Tacos… NEW VENDOR… Super fresh fish and tender shrimp. Great crisp batter. Not as crystalline as Rickys… but better than any Fish Tacos i’ve had recently including Tacos Baja (OG Location)
– Tlacoyo from the Cemitas Poblano stand. Theirs is filled with Beans vs. the traditional requeson, but the beans are SO GOOD. The Masa super soft and airy. Ask for Bandera Style (Red and Green salsa with lots of Queso Fresco on top!)
– Cafe de Olla from the Tamales stand next to Cemitas stand. SWEET!!! But strong.
The place is getting so busy now… Parking in the actual Park and Ride is tough, but there is plenty of street parking along Fig, especially along the JW Temple.
Ah! I just got caught in the trap of called it La as well due to my usual speed posting. LOL!!!
Compita is the nickname for Compadre. In the literal sense your Compadre is the Godfather to your child. So the relationship is VERY close.
In reality most people use it to denote really good friends. Compadre!! You will often hear shouted out during asadas and if you mean a lot to someone they will introduce you as “My Compita HHH”
El Compita is a great name for a taco stand because of all of that. It denotes warmth and someone who will take care of you.
Not a native speaker, but Spanish words that end in -ma, -pa, or -ta are almost always masculine (eg., “el problema”).
Another situation in which you get “el” used w/ a word ending in -a is when it would be awkward to say “la” (“el agua” vs. “las aguas”; “la agua” would be awkward to say).
Not saying any of the above applies to “compita,” though.
YEP! That is key with any language. It matters context and also where the word originated from. It is… until it’s not… lol!
@JeetKuneBao – I haven’t been to area! I recently went on a Compton Crawl (Compton/Atlantic) and the best one I had was their “tire shop” place on the North side of Compton Blvd. Most of the other places were just okay… but there were ladies making fresh flour tortillas for sale on Atlantic which were SO GOOD.
I appreciate them adding to the variety of tacos in LA. The meat is kinda dry and they don’t got a Tia making tortillas. On the plus side is the salsa and the skin!
YES! The one who makes the enchiladas on the Disca? In the two times I’ve been… I’ve been wanting to try… For sure next time. The cemitas de Milanesa they were making looked amazing… But one of those… and I’m tapped out… lol.
Sorry Yoana’s wasn’t there @JeetKuneBao. We went last Sunday at around 7p. We have never seen the Pig Guy… I know even from the time I went previously… there were different vendors. Hopefully she comes back.
Ordered a pescado taco. The ladies informed me of a stray shrimp in my taco which I considered a happy accident. Thanks to @Dommy & P’s recon everything we had was very good, but this was my favorite. Seafood was really fresh & stayed crispy with every bite. I like the DIY toppings - cabbage, pickled onions, salsas, crema, chipotle mayo, etc.
Looking for a big, fat, fried quesadilla? Los Gorditas Chingonas is the spot. No food photo but we shared a big, spicy, fried, Chicken Tinga Quesadilla. They also have hongos, squash blossoms & huitlacoche among other fillings.
@Dommy’s Tlacoyo. Notice the white cheese, red & green salsas, the three colors of the Mexican flag. Dommy explains it better than me but it looked frickin delicious.
I thought about dessert but tapped out and just took a photo of The Lazy Unicorn Truck…
