South Bay Staples

It’s super intense. Like the old school instant noodle chicken flavor packets x3. Really good.

They do a melon highball that looks really good

Yeah i wasn’t gonna order anything to drink but I cracked and ordered a beer because of how heavy/savory everything was.

No alcohol though, right? Looked like Sochu highballs?

Good looking out. Reminds me of the insane chicken ramen I had in Tokyo.

Right above this Ramen place is one of my favorite sushi places in Tokyo, Sushi Taichi. You need to have someone that speaks Japanese to help you book or through a hotel concierge though. I have my friend call in for me to book reservations.

Please report back about taichi I had booked a meal there but my trip to Japan got cancelled last year

I’ve eaten there about 3-4 times it is great! I would say that I actually think the sushi at Sushi Sonagi (Gardena) is better, but Sushi Taichi costs about $100 less for their dinner omakase sushi course, so the value is amazing. The place always feels very nice. The previous visit there was also a sous chef that spoke fluent English, but some visits there is no English spoken. It is the sushi place I consistently book every trip I go to Japan and always enjoy every time I go. The picture of the line shows the ramen shop’s line that was mentioned above.

Kitakata is a great option for lunch. Vegan for me, original for the lady. The original is really good and not heavy, is this more of like an OG chuka style ramen?

+2, my favorite ramen because it’s not a fat/salt bomb. The green chili shio ramen is my goto.

Yeesh what is on there? Vegan cheese? Special crust?

Posting up the Ohtani Special I had some months ago, the Chashu Kimchi Ramen from Tomizo Ramen. It was great. The chashu was well flavored and unctuous, and I like all the veggies, especially the bamboo menma. Kimchi is pretty tasty, maybe not totally traditional but good nevertheless. Noodles are thick as I like them, sometimes I order them firm (katamen). I also like the shoyu ramen.

It is not super spicy for my tastes, so if you want more spice you can request more. I like it just a bit spicy to awaken my tastebuds.

They have what looks to be a Jiro-kei style ramen (Tomizo Ramen limited to 5 a day) that is only served during dinner hours that I want to try soon. “Ninniku iremasuka?”

A fun audio blurb when Jiro style ramen started entering in Western ramen consciousness by Andy Raskin which appeared on All Things Considered.

anyone been to izakaya akatsuki? Its the old sanuki no sato.

yeah, there was a phase when we went pretty much every weekend. It’s solid. Their gyoza are great. My wife enjoys the nabayaki udon. I recall their udon isn’t standard udon and has exceptional springiness. I think it’s a very reasonably priced, solid meal.
