South Bay Staples

Have a few hours to kill in the Torrance area this afternoon. Any new favorites to hit for snacks/treats that will hold up for the way back?

Is this related to Pho Redbo in Garden Grove?

I assumed so, but I’ve never seen this place open…

Teofilo. New Filipino coffeeshop in Carson. Very nice space highlighting beans from the Philippines. Of course I got a ube latte, hot, oat.

Interesting great find!

I agree that Al Noor is the best Pakistani food around.

So happy Cloud Naan is back in business! I got the Hara Bhara Chicken, Veg of the Day (garbanzo beans), and a complementary Masala Chai. The dishes were good on their own, but eating them together on that freshly baked naan just made a better bite. The chicken’s smokiness really worked well with the full flavor of the garbanzo beans, and it was a nice combo.

Walked one block to Sweet Grass Sugarcane Juice afterward. I really liked that they freshly press it out in the open. Definitely a nice addition to the area.

Curry Goat from Gold Spoon. I don’t remember having better ones in So Cal. Available on Tue, Thu, Sat and Sun.

Little Asia currently my favorite Korean Chinese spot in LA doing the best rendition of kangpongji! Also a very good house style tofu that is super generous in portion size.

Little China, Gardena.

Again that strip of Western and the surrounding area is the best eats in South Bay. So much good stuff around this area.

Super cool to see the staff using both Korean and Chinese. Mostly Korean clientele. Place is decently packed for a weekday. I love any chance to use my Chinese!

House tofu. I love glass noodles in soups, braises, saucy dishes!
Fish fragrant eggplant. They lightly batter and fry the eggplant. For my tastes I would like more doubanjiang!

Confirm they are Shandong peeps. My maternal grandma people’s.

Keeping this spot in my local eats. Next time they can make me a ganpong tofu!

I love breakfast and eggs for breakfast. I usually am totally game for any breakfast burrito… but as late with the egg prices, the last two I’ve ordered have been kinda chintzy with the egg. With a Vallarta opening up near home and their inexpensive griddle your own flour tortillas, I’ve been making my Breakfast Burritos at home as of late…

But recently I was driving around my old El Segundo stomping grounds when I saw that Phanny’s had opened up there!! I always stop by Rábano or Quality seafood when in Redondo, so I haven’t had a chance to try. I was going to be in the area again on Saturday morning, I made a mental note to give the a shot!

They are located in that odd little Plaza on El Segundo and PCH where Prime is. When I worked in the area, the only thing of real interest in that Plaza to me was Togos. I tried Teresa’s Mosaic one and it was meh. Now that plaza is bustling!! In addition to Prime and Document which have been there a while, Phannys and a cute little wine shop too!

The Phanny’s is small. The decor a bit spare. The staff was super nice.

The menu is equally tidy.

I needed to head home, so I got my order to go… which I”m sure the Hashbrowns suffered as a result…. But I was happy to see how hefty they were!

I got the Turkey Sausage and the Chorizo (which used Chori-man Chorizo!). Both were absoutely stuffed with meat! It was like several sausages in the turkey…. They were well cooked and juicy. The Chorizo was such a nice balance. Egg and chorizo prepared separately. So you got to really taste both. Loved the Salsa as well!

Now, as a result…. This was not a light breakfast. Afterwards, I was ready for a nap. But glad it’s not an option in the area.

Next to Riera’s? My sister-in-law had to buy an order of dumplings because Riera’s wouldn’t let her use the bathroom and she couldn’t make it for across the street, so great times were had by all punctuating bites of Cubans with fried 'lings

Caps and corks bfast burritos solid and utilitarian. They aren’t nearly as good as barans or phannys but much larger (size of a small football) and a couple bucks cheaper in price. So not the worst trade off.

I know ownership changed years ago but the NRM at Sue’s kitchen is still good. 12 dollars is a solid deal during these inflationary times.

Saw a steady stream of older Chinese ppl which is always a good sign. Wanted to get the xiao cai but I’ll be back again.
