South Bay Staples

Tonkatsu marisichi. Apparently related to a small chain in Tokyo that does thick style katsus with pork rib meat. The katsu bento was ok the sando was over cooked and the bread pieces fell apart in the box. Regular menu prices are pretty high.

It’s soft opening but for right now I would go elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice.

This brings up a needed “state of play” update… Tonkatsu: Where to go in L.A. currently (summer 2025)?

Vendetta Rosa. Next to Canaan and Kotosh. Delicious falafel and garlic sauce. Super nice family!

South Shores Meat Shop. Pretty rare that I post about a place that I haven’t seen posted before here. Non-descript, almost dingy, very hidden away butcher shop tucked into the backside of San Pedro. My son and I were looking for something new to try and found this place on Yelp. We ended up with a pastrami sandwich and brisket sandwich. The pastrami (meat, mustard and onions) was solid. Chock full of pastrami. I’d argue it was a bit gristly, but the pastrami itself was super tender, shaved thin. The bread (I’m a crusty bread guy) was a soft sandwich roll. I’m fine with places that serve soft rolls as long as they are soft and not verging on stale. This one was perfect - very pillowy and complimented the sandwich well! The star of the show was the brisket though. It was piled into the sandwich and we added only provolone. The roast brisket was juicy, tender and had the perfect mix of lean/fatty. Almost no seasoning, so the sandwich was beefy for sure. Probably could have used touch of salt and pepper but nothing else. My son says its the best brisket he’s ever had.

I think there schwarma is good but I can’t judge. I only get the falafel plate and fries. I would order it there so your food doesn’t sit too long

San Pedro sandwich shops/deli’s all use that soft roll. Super specific to that area of LA. I am not a fan. Compared to South Philly hoagies shops and corner NYC deli-markets, LA’s basic lower end sandwiches suck lol sorry but not sorry

Great sleuthing San Pedro and the south part of South Bay are much lesser explored by the ftcers

Nobu Coffee in Gardena.

Reservation only. What do you call this in Japan? Not a coffeeshop. One man makes coffee drinks in front of you???

Seems like a unique experience

Haha. I can totally see that. It’s not my preference, but what I hate is a soft roll that is stale… That said, this brisket was kick a–.

Sue’s kitchen. Definitely scratched the Taiwan food itch. But today some of the cold dishes were a bit too salty. Pig ears were incredible tho and noodles had super good qq. I should ask where they buy their noodles from next time.

Also all this was only 37 bucks

Redwood pie - half spicy sausage half jersey style.

Love doing half and half’s. I wish they had a slightly large topping selection but otherwise I could probably eat this pizza everyday.

Prime pizza today was meh. Squares were dry and had no rise.

They gave me two for the price of one ( they didn’t tell me) so that was nice of them. But probably points to them being a bit old I went there at around 330 today.

Have you had Prime’s meatball sandwich? They do a respectable one

I have not I usually just do two slices there but I’ll put it on my radar for next time!

I’ve honestly been going to redwood way more closer to my house and at least 2x better than prime.

Tempura tendon express at mitsuwa.

Love that I can buy sushi from the market and other foods to mix and match. Unfortunately today the tendon was just ok. Need to go back to the flagship store in old town again.

Same here. Stop going to Prime as well. With how good Redwood is no reason to go to Prime. I just wanted to be fair and mentioned something redeemable about them.

I say if you are going to go further north in the than the best imo is Tommy and Atticus sourdough breads and Uncle Stevey’s bagels. Not a bad option on a weekend morning with light traffic!

I actually prefer the other tempura/udon place in the Mitsuwa food court over Tempura Tendon.

I do not generally like that place. Their tempura sits out too long unless you get it right when it’s fried.

If I’m not doing tendon it’s usually San tou ka for me.
