South Bay Staples

Tommy and Atticus is great for breads lines are atrocious and baked goods are hit or miss but I enjoy having an LA style bakery in South Bay.

I’ll have to check out uncle Steveys!

Redbo pho is open at peninsula mall. Seems to be a waygu a5 pho place.

Anyone been to the garden grove or westminister locations? What are the go tos?

@JeetKuneBao @attran99 @hppzz ?

Frequent stop for my mom and I when Im down there.

French fries for fun. Why not?

Their primo Pho is excellent and we sometimes get a plain noodle soup to help with the portion size.

Ive gotten the combo soup and it delivers. Great pho

Appreciate the rec it’s on the radar for sure just wanted to verify before u sprung for 20 dollar plus pho

For sure! Also clarification – “portion size” refers to my mom and I sharing one primo pho since its pretty big but not quite enough for two to split, hence the extra plain soup

Been to the Garden Grove location a few times and just went to the Rolling Hills location today. Probably our favorite pho in town. I think the best meat quality, along with a good, aromatic broth.

You could start with the combo which has rare steak, brisket, filet mignon cubes, and meatballs. You get a choice of thin vs thick noodles and we prefer thick.

Had the stew which was good too.

Size wise I went regular but you should maybe get a large

The Rolling Hills location is in a strip mall next to an ice skating rink. The space itself is large and kinda reminds me of a Johnny Rockets in decor. Hope they can get sustainable business for the footprint. Service was really friendly though a few small growing pains as they get going.

You guys have some good pho there with this and Pho Hue Oi.

Thanks @avantbored for the Redbo nudge and was ftcfluenced by @NYCtoLA

Had a very good bowl of pho. Soup was clear broth with very complex flavor without being overly salty. Loved the thick flat noodles thanks for that rec @NYCtoLA

Things I didn’t love:

  1. the soup was not very hot. Being canto I love piping hot soup, the hotter the better. This soup was barely warm it almost didn’t cook our rare beef on the side.
  2. I should’ve read NYs comment more carefully I did not know the combo didnt include tendon or tripe which is a bummer. In the future I would probably only get rib meat and beef balls out of their beef offerings.
  3. Price I feel like this is more a comment about our economy but 24 bucks for a large pre tax and tip.

I still would return though because we have very little good pho in the area and this is by far the best.

Yeah the broth slaps but bummer on the heat. I couldnt tell you if my last bowl was just right, too hot, or tepid.

I have been appending “in this economy?!” as a bad dad joke about prices generally, from the bargains to the gouges!

A few recent meals, starting off with Compagnon Bistro. They’re always solid but recently added a few really good new dishes to the menu, like the Nicoise salad and pear tart. Really glad to have Loni & Thomas also running the Whale & Ale.

First time trying out Trani’s Dockside and it was pretty solid. Will definitely go back.

Not a great pic buuuuuuuuut I also finally got around to trying out AttaGirl (David LeFevre’s newest restaurant) and was really impressed with everything we had. A very nice addition to the neighborhood and hopefully they do better than the last few places that have cycled through that location.

Jame as always is great but the panzanella is really a stand out.

Very excited for Patisserie Chantily’s expansion. It’ll be nice to be able to go there and get great pastries AND good coffee.

Ok, not the South Bay but since I’m doing a big drop here, gotta throw in a shout out to Copenhagen Bakery. Love the princess cake but the raspberry macaroon is off the charts.

Love the breakdown here! A great reminder that I must explore South Bay beyond my favorite Japanese places

Haven’t been in a couple of years and thanks for the reminder, we’ll have to go check out their new dishes!

That’s next on our list and glad that south bay is getting higher caliber restaurants! What did you enjoy eating there?

The highlight was the chef’s plate (pictured) which was a nice sampling of a few different spreads along with some foccacia and really good pita. We also got a few skewers (chicken, shrimp, and tenderloin) and for dessert, the Basque cheesecake which was easily the best version I’ve had. Everything was solid but the chef’s plate is a definite “must order” item and can be split between 2 or 3 people.

Dang… Not hot enough broth is a bummer… I wonder if they do it right if you ask them to get it super hot… Some places can execute that, but others will come back with a still lukewarm broth, lol.

I will ask next time I go!

Becoming part of our regular rotation but the galbi was not as tender as I would like it to be. Still the flavors were very good!
