South Bay Staples

Usually the broth is very, very hot given those thick ceramic bowls. You can see it giving off steam on my last visit in Garden Grove. I’d just give it time as it just opened.

I’m a huge fan of Hansol. Beats most of the Korean formal restos in the area for me. I really enjoy their beef guksu.

Matt have you made your way to South Bay Jinmi??

I think low key it’s the best Korean restaurant in South Bay. Just as good or better than Ktown, Garden Grove/Buena Park

Kitakata nan ban. We don’t eat ramen often but due to having a summer cold been there a couple times. Their ramen is my favorite in South Bay not too salty and not tonkotsu. Their special hot and sour was awesome esp if you’re a hot and sour Stan like myself. Only available in July. Gyozas are also very good.

They are also having a hayashi chuka special which looks good. Kitakata seems more Chinese/chuka than other ramen places but I don’t know the nuances so if someone can explain different ramen styles would love to learn more!

Eboshi is one of the few Chinese-Japanese/Chuka restaurants in So Cal. Don’t see much about them other than a few posts here. Love the green chilli shio from Kitakata

Waka Sakura in Tokyo Central Gardena, upstairs. I really enjoyed their more upscale conveyor-belt sushi. Order on tablets, and everything gets sent super fast. Not the biggest variety, but everything we had was decent quality. Favorite bites were mackerel and anago, ordered more of both. Nigiri was generally $4-6 for 2 pieces.

They also have a few salad and veggie dishes along with cooked fish options, like salmon belly, yellowtail collar. Salmon belly was cooked well, moist on the inside.

Pic is albacore sashimi and mackerel nigiri. Didn’t get pics of the other stuff.

We have not! I always associate Costa Mesa with ramen keep forgetting they have some gems. Have you been?

Erewhon is open.

Right next to Bristol Farms, Trader Joe’s, and Costco lol

Anyone try Chachi’s in Pedro?

Yah, that green chili shio is so good. If you haven’t tried the hot and sour July special, it’s excellent as well, as noted above!

Came here to write about Waka Sakura as well. We’ve been for dinner a couple times now over the past two weeks. My kids used to love Kura Sushi, but this is far better quality and the price point is similar. I most enjoy their sushi rice - at its peak, it’s quite solid and crushes most of the local, everyday meal sushi joints’ rice. The fish selection is limited, as you said, but the cuts are nicely sized and high quality.

@fattydumplin any suggestions on when to attempt it to lessen the wait times? Weekends are probably bustling.
