Wow that’s a pretty far detour, but it is def worth stopping when in the area!
We drive in from North OC so it’s not too bad of a detour but worth it. Two places we really wish were closer are Borjstar and Sababa.
Sababa is on my list ppl have been raving about it a lot!
We made our way to South Bay Jinmi for a comforting meal of pork trotter salad, noodles with ground soy bean sauce, and pork neck stew. What a gem of a spot. Only regret was not ordering the soondae, as we noted order after order going out for take out. We were the only diners in the restaurant on a Tuesday night. The panchan was very appreciated with a few items we haven’t seen often. The perilla leaves were a “VIP” item that we received during the second round refill. All in all a very good meal, reasonably priced, and easy parking. Thanks for the FTC recommendation on this thread.
Hey Matthew, I read your post on dishes to try this weekend. What happened over there? I can’t find anything in the news. Good luck with whatever follows.
Thanks @hungryhungryhippos for the 411 on the 110 and PCH night market. We tried going there recently after wings at Shlap Muan, but struck out for tacos. If we had known to go up Figueroa, we would have hit gold. Not all was lost as we pivoted to Thai Curry Pizza. Cheers
might not be the best forum (ha) for this, but I have a new role with the company. hmu on email? kang at eater dot com
I’ll have to check out those places when I’m in Long Beach. What are the goto orders for both those places?
Shlap Muan’s wing flavors Dirty Elvis and Cambodian Dirt are a good introduction. The wings are nicely fried before the magic happens. The Dirty Elvis is a sticky saucey type of wing that get wok tossed. Think sweet, tangy, with a smoky chili note. Cambodian Dirt is their take on lemon pepper. The other wing flavors at Shlap Muan are nicely done as well. Water Buffalo is a nod to Buffalo style wings. Worth traveling for if you’re in the mood.
As for Thai Curry Pizza, we had the green curry pizza. It was interesting encountering those flavors on a pizza. You enjoyment will depend on your fondness of Thai green curry flavors on an so-so crust. I’m guessing the Jitlada x Prime Pizza collab would be the ultimate example of good curry on a good crust. At Thai Curry Pizza, the crust is OK for the pie. Worth trying if you’re curious, but don’t go out of your way.
Nobu coffee- a coffee specialist with a large following in the Japanese/coffee community. He roasts his own beans and his coffee tastings sell out quickly .
He popped up at a small Japanese market. Tbh his coffee is highly acidic and strong without tons of flavor nuances. Very different from third wave coffee.
Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain all the differences to me as I didn’t love this coffee.
Aria grill - new spot that is going to be on the regular rotation.
Read an article from daily breeze and the Persian food was immaculate. Cornish game hen is the juiciest I’ve had in a long time watched them freshly hand packing koobideh kabobs. Also had a smoky eggplant tomato dip that was outrageously good. They have a full line up of kabobs stews and rice polos. Family run and super welcoming l.
Shinsengumi yakitori maybe not the best yakitori but best vibes and really is very very good. Great lunch specials too. Bang bang with Kansha
New restaurant alert: Canaan is opening another South Bay branch. At Pen Center in PV. It’s the old San Pedro Fish Shop location. Hopefully it’s a larger menu with more Taiwanese dishes and breakfast!
Also, Bites and Bashes. Cute little shop on Narbonne in Lomita. Finally made it there for the breakfast burrito. Delicious. Perfect proportions of ham, bacon, egg, cheese and tots. Everything was blended together nicely while still retaining their own form. Eggs were well prepared, not overcooked like burrito eggs can often be. Will be back to try more items!
Great intel on Canaan any intel on when they might open?
No idea. Nothing posted. But the signage on the door is up. I should’ve taken a peak inside but was in a rush!
I’ll check it next time I’m over there!
IMO i think the only SSG yakitori that is good is the one in Torrance. all the other SSG yakitori/ramen/whatever pare in comparison. It’s the OG.
I love how when I’m inside it makes me feel like I’m in Japan, it’s got great energy
i haven’t been in years, but the SSG Fountain Valley used to have that same vibe.
