What's At Your Local Farmers Market? A Look At Fresh Veggies, Fruits, Meats, Nuts and More [Thoughts + Pics]

Got some at BHFM today. They were almost free because I took off without paying then remembered and went back. They hadn’t even realized! :strawberry:

How were the maras?

Marmande.. They don’t really look special, just a red tomato but great raw or cooked, meaty with not too many seeds. I try to get em on the firm side and let them ripen on the counter

Small strawberry, big strawberry flavor.

Weiser is overflowing with melons now. They had about 5 different varieties today. Got this Piel de Sapo (pretty sure that’s what it’s called). It’s already gone. :face_savoring_food:

Mara’s from Harry’s or somewhere else?

I wish weiser would come back to Torrance fm. The info booth said “we have no idea we haven’t heard from them” not sure what that means. I reached out on insta and also didn’t get a response.

AKA “Santa Claus melon” and “Christmas melon”. A local hispanic market chain here in Las Vegas called “La Bonita” has them on sale for 3 lbs/$1.00. I wanted to buy one, but I walk there round trip 4 1/3 miles and these melons are too big to carry home on foot.

BTW, La Bonita has the BEST prices on produce I’ve ever seen anywhere. Sometimes there are visitors from Southern California who buy produce there to take back home.

The Mara are from Harry’s Berries.

Mr Weiser was at BHFM yesterday. If I see him next time I’ll ask about Torrance.

I’m pretty sure that’s what I got. It really is delicious, juicy and tastes like honey. They gave me a tip: it’s best when starting to turn yellow.

Only other place I’ve seen maras is Chino Farm in Rancho Santa Fe

Another photo of the Piel de Sapo for reference.

Also got these incredible Pakistan mulberries at Westfield Farms.

4-5 varieties of melons at Weiser in Venice last Friday. I was there 15 minutes after opening so I’m sure they went quickly. Of course I don’t remember the name of the one I got but it’s delicious!

Just got back from Madrid, renewed and reinvigorated (myself, and the city as well). This dude’s face is all over the place in Spain…

I’d love to hear about some of your favorite spots in the City!

He worked for Martin Berasategui in his early days! Continuing that legacy

Weiser had all kinds of melons today.

The line for Andy’s orchard was pretty wild today! See Canyon was back at the market with apricots. Clafoutis season is definitely here with cherries still around as well. Starting to see some nice looking plums around as well

It was insane—didn’t even consider standing in it.

The peaches I got from Terry’s are incredible. Also got from Reiger, Murray’s and Burkhart. RIP my wallet (looking at $5-$6/lb now on stone fruit)

Also JJ’s has a truly wild assortment of avocados right now. Two different ones the size of your head.

Man Reiger was mostly wiped out by the time I got there around 10:30. People are serious about their peaches!! Seemed like mostly nectarines at Burkhart when I went by, wish you didn’t have to buy by the basket at Murray Farms. Really a fantastic market
