I assume it’s the RC people for their peach ice cream!!! Argh.

Does Scott’s come out to Torrance? I’ve been pretty pleased w/ their peaches/nectarines this season (and in past seasons).

I would say the most consistent provider of peaches at our farmers market is Ken’s

Went to Torrance on Saturday. Japanese cucumbers from Tamai are peak and beating everyone on price. Burkdoll was new to me for stone fruit but they had the first yellow peaches I’ve had this season where the fruit pulled away from the stone cleanly.

Honorable mention for the crazy basil selection at Thao. Just need Weiser to start showing up there again.

You know that freestone vs. cling is about the variety?

I didn’t know that but have now informed myself.

Ken’s Top Notch seems to have the same varieties year after year though and their yellow peaches will typically separate, while this year they do not.

Struck me as a ripening/time on the tree kind of issue but I could easily be wrong.

Do the freestone varieties typically peak a bit later than the cling?

I haven’t been to the FM, but all of the peaches (until this past wk or so) partner has purchased have been cling, and he (and I) usually prefer freestone. I, like @mrgreenbeenz, was also wondering if peaches “develop” a looser stone, as the season goes on (even for the same variety).

In my experience, freestone peaches will come off the stone even if they’re not underripe, and cling varieties always stick even if they’re overripe.

I don’t know if they generally ripen later, but my favorite freestone, Fay / Faye Elberta, has usually been ripe in late July.

I’ll have to ask Ken’s if they are fall away peaches next weekend

The freestone peaches from Regier last week have been underwhelming so far. The nectarines are all much sweeter.

Nah different types have different freestone capabilities. Farmers dislike freestones because they tend to be more susceptible to rot.

Today was the first day for Persian Mulberries. As usual Tenerelli has a list. Totally worth the trouble and the price.

Good reminder. Always like Wong Farms, and their Holy Basil is in!

Just popping by but it sounds like Tenerelli will not have white peaches this summer and their stay at farmer’s markets will unfortunately be shorter this year. They apparently made significant changes after last year’s season that will work better for them longer term. It sounds like the trend will continue so if you enjoy their fruit I recommend you stop by as much as possible over the next several weeks. I was given a guesstimate of being out through August but no guarantees for after.

On a separate but related note, what are your favorite peach producers? At the moment I am leaning towards Arnett for convenience. I’ve had inconsistent experiences in the past with Ken’s Top Notch. Plus Ken’s mostly seems like cling stone from what I remember (Tenerelli peaches were mostly free stone from what I’ve had and recall). Do either of those have a contact or allow for pre-order and pick up? The only other great peach producer I can think of is Andy’s Orchard. From a brief search, it looks like they only go to the Santa Monica weekend farmer’s market these days? Do they also go to Hollywood? I’ve never ventured to either of these markets but might consider the occasional trip in the years to come.

Andy’s is always outstanding. And by outstanding that means I’m out standing in line for them…
