I’m asking because MEHKO’s (microenterprise home kitchen operations) will start being permitted in LA County starting November 1st. The county is expecting ~1,000 applications this year.
For under $1,000 you can start a restaurant or takeout/delivery spot out of your home. My application is already in.
I’m personally super excited about this and see it as a possible transformational moment for the LA food landscape. Think of all the underrepresented cuisines that may suddenly pop up in your neighborhood.
I’m starting a Yelp-type website (pasted below) to cover the movement and keep track of all the openings. This isn’t a profit-seeking venture and I’m not affiliated with anyone–I just really want home restaurants to succeed in LA. What do you think?
Yes I have and I will. Easily take that over the big name places. This is a good thing and it will only prove that LA/So Cal has the best food scene in the country.
There has always been backyard restaurants and some of the best Mexican food in LA is found in the backyards/frontyards.
Instagram is good for now, though I haven’t posted anything yet!
I’d encourage you to register for the website as well. I’ll likely send an email or two once I actually have vendors to put on my map. The site also has a “saved search” capability where you can receive alerts for a particular search you’re interested in.
Partner has great family recipe for banana pudding. We live on an elevated first floor, and I’ve often told him that we should just package and then throw banana pudding as people drive by. Hee, hee.
I made banana pudding last night for a get together. Have made this recipe many times. Every loves it. It’s a riff off the famous Magnolia Bakery recipe. Don’t worry about the 60 Nilla wafer comment. I prefer using the mini Nilla wafers. They fit into the cracks and crevices better.
