Sheng Yuan (Dongbei)
Wow those noodles! How is this not more popular? Delicious nutty sauce, lots of fresh veggies and wide thick noodles. (Minus the egg for me fyi) Also got the Di San Xian.

Ah, the old Chung King site (for those that recall when that was the place for Sichuan).
My go-to has always been Shen Yang, now Shen Yang Tasty, just a bit up the boulevard. I too have no idea why Dongbei-style food isn’t more popular, or doesn’t get more notice.
Abandoned NYC Seafood space in Monterey Park on Garvey and Atlantic finally filled as Fuxing Spring opens up with a Hong Kong style menu.
there’s not a lot of traction for dongbei cuisine. that particular dish reminds me a lot of japanese hiyashi chuka. ironic that it makes a great hot weather dish when the dongbei region is up north.
there have been a number of dongbei restaurants bearing the name sheng yuan.my favorite was the one on garvey near atlantic but it changed names a number of times. i assume this is the one on san gabriel north of valley. it opened way under the radar during the pandemic.
Na Jia Bistro replaces Feng Ling Gui Lin Noodles in Monterey Park next to Capital Seafood.
Hunan Spicy Hometown Flavors replaces Hunan Restaurant in Monterey Park.
Dou Lo Fang replaces Tong Tak in Arcadia.
that place was under the radar. i don’t think it even had a yelp page.though it did have a FB page but their last post was in 2021.
walked by this a couple times, guess it’s a hot pot restaurant that’s all you can eat with high end seafood? I might have to try it some day.
Garage Milk Tea joins Garage Kitchen next door in Monterey Park.

I was in the SGV yesterday, but didn’t traverse many streets. I did notice the former Mama Lu’s Dumpling House at Garfield & Emerson in Monterey Park, the one the fire truck crashed into, is now Hunan Impression.
And I noticed that the former Wong Java House is now known as Wayang.
In the former Noodle Harmony space. Hmm. Dongbei. Any relation to Na Jia Cafe in Rowland Heights?
i think wayang is a rebranding by the same mgmt. still very good indonesian.
Don’t know if there is a connection. Rowland Heights I believe is Shanghai style. Monterey Park is Sichuan.
Can you recommend what you think is good there because I had a very mediocre meal.
Thanks for the tip that Hunan Impression is now open in the ill fated Mama Lu #3 spot that was vacant for 10 years.
If it’s the same, then they took over in 2016, from the original Wong Java House owners. I wondered about a renaming.
Rowland Heights - Na Jia Cafe - is Shanghai and Dongbei (definitely several Dongbei items on the menu), Monterey Park - Na Jia Bistro - is reportedly run by a couple from Dongbei, though they also have Sichuan items mixed in with Dongbei.
For all of the old fans, formerly shuttered DX-Lab has rebranded as a Ghost Kitchen in Echo Park called NuBites. It does look like they’re offering 30% off on orders placed between 11am - 2pm

On that note, does anyone know where I can get Tian Shui Mian - sweet water noodles in SGV? When searching yelp, all I get are dandanmian and zhajiang
I am checking out the Yelp menu pics so far
Chong Qing Special Noodle has it on the menu! Sounds like this is right up my alley. I will report back!
(Right next to the new Macanese cafe!)
