Unique Smokehouse opens up branch on Garvey Ave. in Monterey Park, flipping what I believe was a beauty parlor. Just not enough restaurant sites in the San Gabriel Valley!

Northern Cafe (Garvey X Garfield, aka Lanzhou Lamian). Knife cut veggie noodles. Held up well on the drive back to the South Bay. A good option that is open past 9pm

I like Northern Cafe, especially the liang cai (cold dishes), but some of the things they do annoy me. For example, if you order liang pi there, they serve it in a to-go container with the sauces on the side, as if it’s too much trouble for them to mix it up and serve it in a ceramic bowl. Also, their plastic water cups, plastic spoons, and flimsy napkins degrade the experience. I wish they would step up their effort just a little bit.

M Joy in San Gabriel replacing Master Hu Kitchen only serves New Zealand lamb. Their lamb shank is terrific.

I had this last weekend was also underwhelmed by the ban mian. Perhaps an off-day as the SJB and XLB were not as high performing (the former not as hot and fried; the latter stuck to the paper, as if the steam trays had been prepped much earlier in the day and set in the fridge); and the chun juan filling was too mushy.

Did you ever make it out to Yuan Fen in Hacienda/Rowland? I think that might be the spot for Shanghainese atm

Re: Yuan Fen - I just went. Eel like in Shanghai. Only one I’ve found here that has the same texture and flavor. “Yidushi” (cured pork soup) is good but my mom’s version blows this one away (Included our meal there in our latest vlog  )

Gonna go back to try the rest of the menu! Who wants to join?

Xian Foodie. Before this went to Good Alley and they were sold out of their sesame liangpi. On a weekday. 2 hours before they close. So went to Xian Foodie instead for my fix. This was a good bowl but the pictures for Good Alley looks so damn good. Next time.

Chong Qing Special Noodle. Cold noodle. Have you had this? Nutty, sweet, numbing, and spicy. Great bowl!

I love the revived discussion on Chong Qing special noodles. That’s the hold chef from best noodle house right?

Will have to revisit sometime soon what else should I get?

I really like the cumin lamb knife/hand cut noodle (really whatever floats your boat with their knife/hand cut noodle works) and Sichuan dishes - Chong qing chicken, twice cooked pork, etc
