ESGV Updates (Rowland Hts., Hacienda Hts., etc.)

Re:Back Abbey. Maybe because it’s in Claremont and on the border of San Berdoo I have a family member that swears the Back Abbey low key has some of the best burgers in LA.

The Back Abbey burgers are good, and at some point a decade or more ago, their duck fat fries were amazing.

The duck fat fries taste not duck-y at all now. The fries were my favorite reason for going there when we lived in the area.

But the general menu is good and their selection of beers is quite nice. They’ve since opened a location in Upland off the 210 Campus exit.

Hilltop Jamaican in Pomona?

In Google Maps I have flagged Furn Saj (Lebanese) in Glendora and Belly & Snout (Filipino) in Rancho Cucamonga, I presume in both cases from reading reports here.

Pollos Taliban - corner of Garey/Grand in Pomona on Sunday mornings. Delicious pollos asados estilo Sinaloa

Pola’s Mariscos - corner of Central/Arrow Rte in Montclair. The best ceviche, campechana and menudo in this area. A few stores down there is Layered Cakerie that has a really tasty horchata tres leches cake.

Tacos Los Martinez - on the corner of Holt/Towne in the same shopping center as Rite Aid is great carne asada burritos and al pastor tacos. Opens usually after 5pm. The guacamole salsa is excellent.

Pie Trap Pizza - Covina, not too far from Pomona but really excellent pizza and also attached to a local brewery.

Carnitas Al Estilo Michoacán in Ontario has really good carnitas and a great salsa verde to compliment them. I believe on Mountain Ave/Mission Blvd. Order by the pound or tacos.

And course Mariscos Jalisco for shrimp tacos and Hilltop Jamaican for oxtails, curry chicken, patties and curry goat.

Yummy BBQ replaces Sinbala in Rowland Heights. Cantonese BBQ and combo plates. Can you imagine a Canto place replacing a Taiwanese standard out there?

Wow that Sinbala been there for a long time.

looks like arcadia is the last standing.

I’ve always been surprised it’s lasted that long in Rowland Heights as quality was fairly low to me. Arcadia makes sense cause of the lack of taiwanese food.

85 Degrees opens up fried chicken outlet in Hacienda Heights.

J&G fried chicken in the Ranch 99 plaza on Asuza. Looks like it’s near or next to Earthen.

Thanks this is just humble temple food cooked by volunteers. They have a $10 buffet but really should not be eating it like a buffet and pig out

Ma’s Kitchen…
Family dinner for 8. Got there at 6:30 and thankfully we had a resy bc the place was packed. My wife wanted to come here because we’ve grown up going to the other Ma’s in LA / SF over the years and most of those were pretty dated. This place has nice decor, a calm ambience and everything was plated beautifully, so a great start.

  1. Samsa’s - I never actually got to try one. My kids devoured them and said it was the best thing they ate all night. The lamb filling and savory crust got them.
  2. Lamb ribs - Oddly enough, most of the fam ate them plain and appreciated the mix of fat, gristle, chewy meat and tender meat. I went to town with the salt, chili and cumin. Only negative is that by the end, the fat had gotten cold and congealed, which made it a lot less appetizing. One note - a lot of dishes are pretty cumin-forward, but even my 13yo, who hates cumin said the food was so good he didn’t mind the cumin!?!?
  3. Stir fried beef tripe - this was fine. Not amazing. But well executed, not too greasy and nice strips of tripe.
  4. Beef ribs - 3 massive ribs with each rib sliced into 3/4 pieces. Roasted so all the fat was rendered, nicely browned on the surface with some crisp bits but not overcooked so still incredibly tender. Lots of cumin. As a cheap Chinese guy (LOL), I mostly appreciated that 3 massive ribs at a recent meal at Major Domo cost $250 (tho my son noted that that came with fried rice) versus this cost $50… Amazing QPR bc fried rice ain’t worth $200
  5. Big plate chicken - I usually love this dish and this rendition is the best I’ve had. Hard to explain but the sauce wasn’t as in your face and those noodles are so damn Q. I think we ended up getting 7 extra servings and probably could have done more. Best noodles I’ve had in LA since moving here… These are flat, wide, hand-pulled noodles with a level of springiness I’ve only had at 1 or 2 other places before.

Overall, a wonderful meal with a wonderful price. Only negative is no alcohol.

Really liked Luyu Dumplings. The dumplings were good, but even better was the you po noodles, which I rank best in SGV. Perfectly tan ya / al dente, with a spicy, garlic flavor that was well integrated into the noodles — unlike most other places. The cucumbers were a hit for the same reason — much better flavor than the average SGV smashed cucumber dish. I would give the atmosphere a 1 out of 5 though. It was actively annoying with the phone constantly ringing loudly.
