Koreatown - 2019 to

Mm, last time I had Zzamong was during the first return-to-indoor-dining COVID moment when only one vaccine was out? I think I was just so glad and relieved to return to some kind of societal norm that I wouldn’t offer any kind of more objective opinion.

I’ve had the wok’d, on-the-side style at Young Pung in Garden Grove (RIP) and did enjoy it much more than the regular style. Why? Who knows – maybe something about the ability to control the sauce.

Any love for Paik’s Noodle? You can smell the wok hei from outside the door.

I believe the restaurant has a historic reputation in its eponymous source (Jeonju). But I didn’t get to talking about that too much with the owner.

Their signature Jeonju-style was a bit more red and came with a steamed egg in a steel cup, over which you ladled some broth and mixed it with gim. My girlfriend got it. That also delivered.

Jeonju Hyundaiok rules hard

Stir fried is my fave that wok hei enhances the jjm.

Had it at little China in Gardena recently it was so good.

Seafood bibimbap from Gamja Bawi – never ceases to satisfy me.

Paiks is good for fast casual. We enjoy the Buena Park location bc they have outdoor seating and we get wings from BBq chicken across the street. Get drinks and dessert at 85 degrees after.

Oh Mama Kitchen and Stereoscope Coffee nearby too!

The Paiks in BP rules!

Yes its a dangerous corridor! Also the pastries at Smoking Tiger are interesting. Inspired by a very famous coffee group in Seoul

Haven’t enjoyed the Paik in LA; found the JJM to be pretty lackluster. Maybe it’s location dependent?

I love the Paiks by me in Granada Hills. Never a miss there and all the staff are so friendly. Also very very consistent.

Friends. Didn’t I hear some chatter a year or so ago that there were some very excellent Vietnamese (specifically for pho) places in Ktown?

Anybody been to Olle? Specializes in smoked duck steamed at the table in hinoki boxes.

Anyone know if the Salvadoran corridor still going strong on the weekends?

Lunch at the Ktown Plaza food court. Beef bibimbap from Gamja Bawi, spicy shrimp dumplings from Pao Jao, french tonkatsu from Tonkatsu House.

More food than two adults could eat in one sitting. Plenty of leftovers.

We got there around 1130 and the crowd was just picking up. By the time we left at 1pm, most spots had lines. The mall seemed to be doing a decent bit of business for a Thursday afternoon.

from a couple of weeks ago since i’m still under the weather. these hit the spot after returning from Paris.

Chosun Galbee’s mulnaengmyeon. maybe my favorite mul naengmyeon. i just love the proportions and balance. the thinness and chewiness of the noodles, the long thin cuts of white kimchee and beef, and the broth is just right to me with a added vinegar and a small bit of mustard.

Miari Noodle House’s clam and kimchi kalguksu. pretty good, though kalguksu isn’t really my top noodle. all aunties there for lunch and it’s very homestyle, you can also get sujebi or other comforting dishes.

there’s now Pyeongyang naemgyeon being served at Seogwan by Yellow Cow. Pyeongyang style naengmyeon isn’t my favorite but i’m still determined to try it again - an acquaintance from Seoul told me it takes 10 tries to understand Pyeongyang naengmyeon because it’s quite a bland dish. i prefer the chewiness of Hamhung style so far but want to get to the 10x trial of Pyeongyang style (I think I’m at about 5x, so halfway there).

looking for a place to try Jinju naengmyeon for its seafood broth.

mul naengmyeon at Ham Hung (walking distance from Yuchun and Chosun Galbee).

great noodle texture. personal preference is to have some julienned asian pear both for texture and to balance out the broth’s sourness.

we liked the meal here, but the blaring music gave me a headache. i’d return with earplugs and a bib.

I’m not sure if this is the ktown thread and it blows my mind that we don’t have a more active one since the amount of Korean restaurants is second only to South Korea.

Ended up doing a triple bang after seafood palace and Beijing pie house. Ktown has changed so much in the last 6-10 years they built a huge building next to pollo a la brasa! I feel old as hell lol

Jjan was recommended by a friend and seems to be a hipster/elevated po jang macha. What surprised me most was the amount of non-Asians it was a majority of hipster looking non-Asian ppl and maybe 1/3 Asian. Which rang my alarm bells.

But the food was spectacular fried pork belly with green onion salad popped high quality samgupsal expertly grilled with a very well dressed salad and the teokbokki was the best version I’ve tasted almost like a cross between traditional and an Italian ragu. Reminiscent of j and v vodka fusilli. So damn good with a spicy but not over the top kick

Triple Bang?!?!?! I’m just catching up on your initial Bang Bang post. Pretty awesome effort.

Glad to see Jjan still alive and kicking. Jjan was a spot that I realized I might be getting too old for the fun places (read: dark and rowdy), and that was around 2017. LOL

Ha that’s how out of touch I am didn’t know jjan has been around for so long. It was very good and super lively. Also made me feel old too but it’s nice to feel young once in awhile.

Ham Ji Park closing?

https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodLosAngeles/comments/1paysdk/last_day_at_ham_ji_park/

Apparently, 6th St location closed today and Pico location closing at the end of December. The most recent comment above says they’re remodeling, but going to need to call in to make sure.
