Moon House, West LA (not great, not terrible, $20-25/dish)
Somewhat salvaged by Noble tea, sawtelle
That’s funny I was just reading about Moon House. Someone was talking up the Orange chicken
My kids liked the orange chicken! It was just a tad overcooked
.
They sure do!
back in la.
cosetta: caesar, smoked mozzarella sticks, and stepmother, and fungi pizza (not pictured). like the sammich, got some proper spice to it, and possible overly crunchy bread (almost crouton crust half an inch in). nice caesar.
Sushi Inaba Takeout: Nama Chirashi. Hit it out of the park and traveled well (in an air-conditioned car). Starting to wonder how badly I mishandled my Sushi Sho bara chirashi (1hr+ transit, 95 degrees, subway oven) …
Nam Won Gol: Chueotang <3. First time in person. Love a loach soup and the myeolchi bokkeum (stir-fried anchovies) here are fire. It seems the quality of the other banchan offerings has dropped a bit since I last had it, though.
Welcome (back)!
Where else are you planning/hoping to hit while you’re in town?
you’ll live
welcome
I noted that the new BS Comedor is taking reservations starting later this week. Short list of times available, likely to get things going well before expanding. Waiting to see a menu to ensure the chicharon is available before heading over to see if it’s a a good neighborhood spot.
Thank you, thank you.
Just had some Pao Jao shrimp and griddled mandu, and I have some Jun Won Dak braised sablefish and Gamja Gol gamjatang waiting in the fridge for me later.
Hoping to hit up Alto, Shoya, Nanbankan (for the mems), some SGV spots (been interested in Shandong, Shunde, Macanese, Northeastern Chinese, and Chaoxianzu foods recently - might have to do Feng Mao in K-town…), some Filipino spots (maybe Max’s), and a Lao spot or two. Maybe a Burmese place, too. Also been fixated on non-Brazilian and non-Macanese former Portuguese colonies’ food, recently, but my search for Cape Verdean, Mozambican, and Goan spots has not been going well, haha.
Gotta make a real list, though. Any suggestions would be awesome.
Thick list!
I think @JeetKuneBao is all about Qing Dao Bread Food, haven’t tried myself yet. Wonder if some of the further eastern Northeastern Korean-Chinese foods might not also be had in Buena Park/La Habra/Fullerton, too? I’m under-eaten in this cuisine outside of the greatest hits (jjajangmyeon &c.)
I lost a list of some Laotian recc’s down in Long Beach, but I think the best spots are there. I ate at Uncle Fung’s on 7th street in LB a long time ago and liked the noodles. I wonder if anyone here has recent experience with Borneo Kalimantan in Alhambra; LaaLaaPan in Woodland Hills is also supposed to be quite good, but what a trek!
Long Beach is known more for Cambodian than Lao. There are only a few Lao specific places, most of which also have Thai menus. Vientiane and Nok’s Kitchen down in Orange County get the most notice. There’s also Kop Jai Lai in Mission Hills, the northern end of the San Fernando Valley.
Lao: Vientiane or Nok’s Kitchen in Garden Grove/Westminster in Orange County; Kop Jai Lai in Mission Hills, the northern end of the San Fernando Valley.
Shandong: past Qing Dao Bread Food, as @avantbored mentioned
, I’m hard pressed to come up with much offering anything past dumplings since Earthen closed.
Macanese: I’m not sure how much they lean to Macanese over HK, but there’s HK Macau Bistro in San Gabriel.
Dongbei (Northeastern Chinese): Granted, it’s been a while, but my go-to was Shen Yang Tasty in San Gabriel. Most of the other Dongbei places seem to have shuttered.
Burmese: Yoma Myanmar in Monterey Park; Rangoon California Burmese Food House (whew, what a name!) in El Monte.
I’m afraid I can’t help much with the former Portuguese colonies
There was a short-lived place to pick up Cape Verdean food at c. 2020.
There was an Indian place in Culver City that had some Goan dishes. I’m not sure if they are still around, or not. EDIT: Lawrence of India, and sadly, it is not.
Wah! Thanks so much for this!! And @avantbored & @robert , too. I’ll see how many of them I can hit.
Was making my way through @EattheWorldLA ‘s archives and think I came across that Cape Verdean place. Will probably have more luck back on the East Coast for that and it’s siblings…
Mayura or Navaa in Culver City? I also recommend Jasmine in Culver City for Burmese food
My Burmese rec would be Mandalay Morning Star in Covina. Voted No.1 Burmese Cuisine in Los Angeles | Authentic Myanmar Restaurant of 2024 | Mandalay Morning Star Burmese Kitchen
I think I mentioned Navat a while back, it’s the one that leans a little more uzbek while the other one I believe leans a little more armenian. Usually a taco truck there too.
I had to dig around to find it, but it was Lawrence of India. It had a small menu of Goan items, but has closed ![]()
For Shandong:
Ly Family Kitchen in Rowland. Bring a cooler to stock up on the goodies. This place kinda flies under the radar
It’s not on your list regional of Chinese but housemade noodles and Xian have gotten really good in SGV in the past few years
