solid opening night. overall the spice seemed a bit toned down and i wouldn’t mind if it went up a level. the sambal tumis, bergedil and roti were all great. char koay kak was only miss for me.

service and foh were excellent, they clearly have the a team working the opening.

good dinner, good company. agreed, excellent service - smooth operation that felt dialed in and not like an opening night. our waitress was kind and attentive to food allergies / preferences. and a little extra spice/heat on the food wouldn’t be bad, too.

i liked the bergedil potato fritters, pork jowl satay skewers, and roti the best. the rojak, when composed with the right bite, was quite nice, too. as mentioned above, the cendol sundae’s serving glass was a little narrow at the bottom, so it would be nice to be able to compose a mixed bite more easily. on the char koay kak, i was expecting either a little more crunch or textural contrast between the bean sprouts and rice cakes, but i don’t know how this dish is supposed to be. i’m not familiar with Malaysian food, but i’d return in a little bit and i can see this place doing quite well.

Just joined ftc to leave my personal thoughts

One word : amazing

Reminds me Korean shrimp chips in most perfect way. Perfect compliment to different sambal selection and beer

My char koay kak’s rice cake was perfectly crispy and had beautiful contrast with crunchy sprouts. Riesling is match made in heaven with this dish.

Satay. Both pork jowl and chicken is perfection

Highlight of the night. No other words needed. Just so good

Sexy chef and his sexy fish. Just sublime.

I love it as much as leopardo’s soft serve. So good

Happy for chef Johnny that he found good a home and he deserve whatever glory he gets in the future.

Good job on the photos. The lighting in this restaurant really does no favors for the essential influencers that it needs for it to be successful.

Real talk though, @JLee and team are already firing on all cylinders on Day 1 (and even before that for the tests and F&F dinners). Beef cheek rendang and chicken/pork satay obvious early favorites, but the vegetarian dishes have been revelatory.

For all of you who want want more one-plate or home-y Malay and inspired classics, stay tuned for possible lunch service down the road…

+1 Service on point, food doesn’t feel like a first night.

Rendang + roti were a highlight. Rojak was also memorable, great contrast in textures and flavors. Bergedil was my favorite of the night.

Agree with @pomodoro that the cendol is delicious, but a little tricky to get a balanced bite. Loved the ice cream, pandan noodle, and toasted buckwheat the most. A drizzle of the syrup around the glass before adding the red bean would be welcome so I pick up some of the gula melaka flavor as I get deeper into the sundae. Looking at the “mechanics” of consuming it: the ice cream is the hardest component to get your spoon through and because of the wide mouth of the glass it covers the red bean completely. So it’s a can be hard to get through all the layers without risking something spilling out the side when you have the comparatively harder ice cream on top of softer things. The sundae glass gets pretty narrow at the bottom and I wonder if they typically have different shaped spoons you can pair with it to make getting at the red bean deeper in the glass easier. This is really nit picking though, but I think could be worth the effort of some tweaks, because the foundation of the dessert is S-tier for me.

Surprise of the year. The restaurant nailed everything — food, wine, service, atmosphere. Only quibble: rice was too dry / hard.
