now that I think of it, had a very similar experience at Queen Street. Maybe that’s in the Last Word Hospitality training program???
At Shin’s I tried ordering a couple slices of pepperoni and they said if we’re doing meat, we’re doing the fennel sausage

Shrimp chips and sambals. Pretty good. Not spicy enough for my tastes. Peony liked these more than I did.
Chicken skewers. Good
Turnip skewers. Good
Mushroom crispy rice. Very good. Better than Majordomo for me.
Cauliflower. Very good. Same.
Cendol sundae. Very good
Staff. Best looking staff in LA.
My one of favorite restaurant in LA
The Tokyo turnip skewer is really good and the Passion Fruit Cream Pie is also great. (new items)
As a big fan of Pearl River Deli, I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t like it as much as I wanted. We had:
Sambal: really wanted these to be spicier and more funky. Even the hot one wasn’t hot enough for me
Gado Gado/Rojak: Felt like these needed more of something funky again
Pork Jowl Skewer: Would have preferred a different dipping sauce to the hot mustard which felt very Japanese to me
Char Kway Teow: Good but felt like it was missing some wok hei and needed a lot of acid
Fish in Coconut Curry: Also good but nothing special, wanted more funk.
Maybe my palette is just off but my partner had coincidentally just came back from a trip to Malaysia and also wanted more punchy flavors. My only point of comparison is Ipoh Kopitiam in the SGV which I loved. The service was great but I think I was expecting to be wowed a bit more since I loved PRD, the hainan chicken was mind blowing to me the first time I had it.
I have no reference for Malaysian food but have been to Rasarumah three times now and think it’s a great neighborhood level restaurant. I’m always a sucker for rendang but the noodles, clay pot, and turnip skewers were standouts to me.
Authentic or not I don’t care we are in LA, I like food here. Over here and holy basil is two places I adore most.
My personal favorite is char koay kak and skewers.
They are now doing hainan chicken on Wednesday.

Agree on the authenticity front. The food is freaking good. Chef Johnny’s cooking demonstrates a deft touch and a not often appreciated finesse in presenting a Malaysian menu. Not everything needs to be turned up to 11.
The room, staff, and price point make it a nice gathering spot with friends.
In a way calling food “inauthentic” is disparaging the native cuisine —treating it as a fixed, constrained set of familiar dishes without any room for innovation.
Rasarumah “Flavor House”
Yep. Fun meal with @Probangbanger & Fam, @PorkyBelly @attran99 and Mr & Mrs @moonboy403. A cool thing was none of us had complete knowledge of the cuisine. Unusual for a group of curious Angelenos who between us have eaten our way thru a wide and culturally diverse assortment of restaurants.

We pretty much ordered OOE. Not one bad dish. My favorites were the sambals, begedil (potato fritters)
and pork jowl skewer, greens cooked perfectly. I was most looking forward to the rendang - flavors are there, but not the heat - next time I’d add one of the spicy condiments. I’m sure I liked the desserts but was so full by that time I don’t remember.
Happy Eating!
It really is a great place to go with a group!
Go back on a Wednesday for their HCR!!!
What a fun evening with a great crew!
Many thanks to Chef @JLee and his crew for their feeding and welcoming us.
I did not know that Rendang could be made even better by adding more coconut and stuffing it in a roti with accoutrements a la a southeast Asian lettuce wrap.
The sundae delivered as promised and I loved how it reminded me of the Vietnamese che I grew up eating.
I need to come visit on HCR Wednesdays.
I GO WITH YOU!
Let’s do it, @Dommy!
