Shanghai acquaintance says Auntie Qiu (Arcadia) has the best Shanghai food. Quality is good, but some dishes too sweet for my taste. Sweeter than average Shanghai food, she says.
some shanghai-ese have a sweet tooth. i’ve always speculated this to be a consequence of the international settlement that was established in shanghai. the first evidence we had of this in LA was probably long xing ji who offered a version of XLB with sugar in them. i couldn’t bring myself to try one. a shanghai-ese friend says you might not get the best experience at auntie qiu unless someone in your group speaks with a shanghai accent.
I think between this, Noodle Harmony, and the hotel developments, we see how this is headed. And it is not good.
Long Xing Ji (originally Wang Xing Ji) is Wuxi-style. Granted, Wuxi is only about 80 miles from Shanghai, but for some reason, the subset of cuisine there uses a liberal amount of sugar. Much more than Shanghainese. It’s the one thing that separates out Wuxi from Shanghai. The cold, smoked fish appetizer served at some Shanghainese places is often listed as “Wuxi Smoked Fish.” Makes me wonder if Auntie Qiu skews more Wuxi, despite the skyline on the menu.
shanghai is cosmopolitan enough that i’d consider wuxi a subset of the cuisine, much the same way the spicy hanzhong subset is still considered shaanxi cuisine.
Chao Wei Ju
Chaozhou from Chaozhou not via Cambodia, Thailand, or Vietnam.
The dipping sauces are ridiculously good. Sacha very peanuty, the garlic is super garlicky with some spice, and the chilli sauce has pretty good heat for Southern coastal. Very clean light broth. They have Chaozhou apps, hotpot, and ribs. Love hearing the multiple languages and multilingual staff.
Sauces and condiments you have to pick up at the desk not tableside caddy. Modern and simple design. I think this was a pho joint in a past life.
I am going to give this place a rec. With those dipping sauces I would love to come back for hotpot
My family loves Xian Famous Food in NYC. Hoping to try it soon.
What’d you think?
And what did you think???
I like it but I am not too familiar with Xian food. I didn’t hear any loud biang biang sounds from the kitchen but the noodle had some good chew.
They must have misunderstood my shitty ABC Taiwan accent Mando because I got a big bowl of plain biang biang/youpo noodles and a separate big plate of tomato egg lol. So I just dumped the whole plate of tomato egg onto the noodles.
Got Clayfu’flienced and tried Jin in Old Town Pas.
Maybe I should have ordered it 50% sweet instead of 75%. Got the high mountain oolong. Not sure what milk they used but not much body to it at all. Also I got the drink in like 1 minute. It was tasty but a pass for me. Plus I rather deal with tight “compact” plaza parking than Old Town Pas parking lol
Good spot
It’s cause they don’t do it as a dish together without pork. Their tomato egg noodle is with another type of noodle.
But good idea!
I never get milk as it ruins the delicate nature of their tea.
I am very very anti milk/creamer in good boba tea spots.
Love this place. The sauces are so good
So many choices for moon cakes at 99 Ranch San Gabriel. I’ll just go with Kee Wah lol
Also how sad the current state of Focus Plaza. I used to come here all the time on the weekends in the 90’s. This was the biggest and most famous plaza in all of SGV
Qing Dao Bread Food.
Makes me happy because it reminds me of my Shandong granny. They don’t skimp on the fillings!
Customers before and after me got bags but I get a box LOL. ABC treatment special
