WSGV updates

Recently had great Sheng Jian Bao (生煎包) pan fried dumplings at Min Min Pie House in Alhambra. These were just as good as the ones at Kang Kang Food Court. Bonus points for being cheaper than KKFC’s SJB too! Hot, freshly prepared with nice browning on the bottom.

Workers appeared to be making fresh dumplings the morning I was there.

Depends on if I can afford to fall asleep soon after the meal. If not, XLB for the win.

Does anyone know if Xi’an Tasty, on the second floor of the plaza where PP Pop is, has reopened?

Also does anyone have any recent recommendations for Big Plate Chicken and/or Cumin/Lamb Noodles?

Thanks in advance!

there has been some discussion around here of Xian Biang Biang Noodle for this kind of food. I have yet to try

Biang biang w/eggplant

I love the big plate chicken at Monterey Park’s Northern Cafe and Lamb Cumin noodles at Chong Qing Special noodles.

i haven’t eaten af qing dao in ages. that garlic sauce has a 10 kiloton yield. IIRC, it’s supposed to be used only with the pork, though.

interesting, the replies i sent via email aren’t showing now.

those SJB look a little crispy, but since tasty… (was it noodle or house) closed, any other place that makes good SJB is always a good thing.

I like the cumin lamb biang biang noodles at Meet Qin Noodle.

Happy AYCE Hotpot replaces Happy Lamb Hotpot in Rosemead. Since Happy Lamb is a chain, it seems like management is disaffiliating and going independent. Glad I kept my Happy Lamb eating apron. First time I’ve seen AYCE in a restaurant name.

Tang Gong in Monterey Park is closed. I think that leaves one retail tenant in the massive Atlantic Place mall, Daikokuya.

Why Thirsty

Taiwanese Railroad style pork chop rice. This is something my family ate while traveling outside of Taipei. Would have liked a marinated egg and some suan tsai but very tasty pork chop.

Yi Mei, San Gabriel

Modern decor with plenty of seating. Communal spot to get as much garlic soy as you want in addition to sugar, vinegar, chilli sauce, etc.

A little history! Back in the 90’s SGV the OG Yi Mei was on Atlantic next to a Ding Hao supermarket. Near Cascades, NBC, Duck House, Jim’s Bakery part of Atlantic. They had a fire and reincarnated into Huge Tree Pastry. Another Yi Mei popped up in Rowland Heights. Haven’t been there in years but it was good if I can recall.

Honestly the OG location with that Taiwanese auntie was the best. They had the usual Taiwanese breakfast items and carby goodness you can get to go or frozen. From my memory there was only like 4-5 tables. I don’t know about these other Yi Mei locations and how they came about. I have never tried that other Taiwanese breakfast place. That OG place according to my Taipei born and raised mom was pretty damn good. I used to go almost every week.

This Yi Mei while I appreciate their offerings and the comfortable dining room is pretty far in comparison to the OG. I wish some of you guys were able to try the OG Yi Mei.

Ohmigod, I think I have vague impression of the Yi Mei. Are you sure it wasn’t more like the 1980s? I vaguely recall that there might’ve been some sort of, er, plain eatery where my parents would get you tiao that mnight’ve been like halfway btw Ding Hao and… an optician? I don’t think I ever went inside; I think I just sat in the car b/c the place was tiny.

Late 80’s I believe is when they opened up. That’s the spot. That was used to be my optometrist, Maw Chang Optical lol. There was a bookstore next to it too. I used to “read” Lao Fu Zi comics and sneaked some peeks at the dirty magazines LMAO

Shancheng Bistro in Alhambra has closed. It had replaced New England Fish and Chips.
