Glad you enjoyed it. I was curious about those fun drinks you got. FYI there is parking behind the shop.
Was there last weekend (hi @tiberiusnero ) and totally forgot about the broad beans. Dang!
Did you ever try their stuffed lotus root?
Stir-fried water spinach also strong
Also what happened here?!
Did you end up trying banh mi from here? Anyone has? Wondering if it’s worth trying for the added convenience
@JeetKuneBao, love the photo of the tofu and greens dish. What a wonderful, chefly presentation of that dish. While I haven’t eaten at a lot of Shanghainese places, I loved getting that at Shanghai Bamboo House in Arcadia, err, at least when they had it. I recall having to decipher it on the menu as it was by the scientific name of the green ![]()
Kalimeris Indica!
malan tou is much easier lol
I think also known as aster leaf?
Dead simple to make at home; aster leaf easily acquired at Chinese market (sometimes H Mart too).
Baked bean curd product from the market, dice it; treat the aster the leaf the same; throw it in a food processor if you don’t want to mince; dress with a little sesame oil and sugar
the 168 supermarket gelsonized just that small corner (pictured) to have that one place that now offers cooked foods. banh mi my tho went on to open two locations on garvey in san gabriel (just east of new) and in rosemead (between muscatel & rosemead) which orignally offered only a subset of banh mi compared to the OG - but also introduced a couple of banh mi which seem to be the ideas of the family member(s) who run the new location(s) and at least one of those versions - with pork marinated in lemongrass & garlic - seems to have been adopted by the OG.
all three locations close at 4pm.
Good observation about Shanghainese food being brown or green.
Thanks, I’ll have to try making that at home sometime
I didn’t know that back then, and feel a bit better that neither did JGold
He was a big fan of the dish, and used to mention how much he missed it after a place in Rowland Heights had closed. That place framed his review, which stayed on the wall of the restaurant - like some sacred text - through multiple succeeding restaurants.
The wontons were pretty meh. The sauce was just pieces of chili crisp and peanuts. Another place capitalizing on the DTF model and style. Other places in SGV with aunties making better carby goodness
Baked bean curd is money for alot of homestyle Chinese dishes.
Thank you for sharing that JGold likes malan tou!
Yes, and that’s a main reason about why I really like EATING Shanghainese food but don’t love looking it (seriously).
It’s looking p good to me
A couple of updates for Main St in Alhambra
Perfectly Sweet at 126 W Main has permanently closed down and there is a new Korean restaurant replacing Sweethoney Dessert at 410 W Main
@J_L hope you don’t mind I x post this in SGV thread.
3 He Noodles, Henan, family run with housemade noodles. Looks so good and QQ
Be patient with the chef and the staff at 3 He Noodles. They are new to running to a restaurant. The end product is worth it!
ALL of the banners at the Alhambra 99 Ranch Market food court that were there just two weeks ago have been replaced. This is after the rapid turnover in businesses had already already turned most of them over earlier this year. But upon closer inspection the new banners are no longer restaurant names but food descriptions (Leave A Black Duck???), and the old restaurants are still there.
