Ya i’d say chinatown is downtown too
I feel like when I cross the 101 I’ve left downtown.
Peony is on a business trip, so I decided to go to one of the few restaurants we disagree on — Petit Trois. I think it’s quite good, but she thinks it is only “fine.” (Correct me if I’m wrong.). I continue to disagree. The execution at Petit Trois is strong. They really nailed the duck confit and potatoes tonight. Better cooking than Republique.
I haven’t had better versions of their classic French dishes outside of France and you can definitely get worse versions of those dishes there.
Some of my favorite dishes in LA, ever.
I’m happy! The food was pleasing and right.
Look at the leeks - so pretty! Amazing texture and shape. And the flavor, so subtly profound.
The endive salad - each leaf just barely fits my mouth, which is the perfect size. I love the way the curved leaves scoop up the walnuts and avocado. I love the mild bitterness.
The mussels. Here, if I’m being honest, we just have mussels, in some sort of tasty sauce. I can’t say it’s anything life changing. But I encourage everyone to ask ChatGPT to rate the healthiness of mussels on a 1 to 10.
About the sole meunière, the best compliment I can give is that I can’t name a single way in which it could be better.
Chartreuse VEP is very special. It’s no marketing gimmick. Tasted side by side with regular chartreuse, its superiority was clear to us, though if you prefer to be punched in the face with the aggressive herb flavors of regular Chartreuse, I get that too.
I am thankful for all the effort that the cooks put into this food. And our waiter was very kind and accommodating.
I feel like this restaurant has if anything improved over time. I like it a little bit more than Republique.
Do you recall how much a pour was? And did they tell you what vintage they poured?
Peony: I don’t remember they mentioned vintage. Here is the menu (see top right column for price):
Warrior: i didn’t know it had vintages

The meal was very good. Very comforting food.
Unfortunately, they were out of lots of items on their wine and beverage list. 2005 Leoville Barton? Nope, instead only a couple of Bordeaux producers I’ve never heard of.
No verte VEP anymore. No Averna 1980s.
Pictured in the photo are Chartreuse jaune and jaune sommeliers edition. I prefer regular verte to both of them and didn’t notice much difference in the sommeliers edition beyond more alcohol.
